Hebrews 11:6 NIV – “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who EARNESTLY SEEK HIM.”

Prayer is always the Expression of Faith. The person with Daring Faith…Prays.

The PRAYER of FAITH – It’s you asking God TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT HE HAS PROMISED IN HIS WORD

Mark 11:22-24 ESV – 22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever SAYS to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received[a] it, and it will be yours.

Faith is a spiritual force based on the eternal laws of God that can change things in the natural.

The prayer of faith is a “prayer that changes things.” Before you get the wrong idea, the prayer of faith is not a magic wand or a genie in a bottle. But prayer and faith are tools that we can use to implement God’s will in our lives. Through the prayer of faith, we can have the things that God desires for us to have.

•Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible, and receives the

impossible!

•Faith is not believing that God can but that God will! !

•Faith is believing in things when common sense tells you not to!

•Faith is the KEY that releases the resources of God into our situation!

Luke 18:1-8 NIV  Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ 4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’” 6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

•Prayer is the highest order of business. For it links a powerless human to the creative force of God’s sovereign power!

“When we work, we work; but when we pray, God works.”- Max Lucado

•If you and I are too busy to Pray, we give our spiritual life a funeral!

•Our subject comes from Jesus’ parable to those who may grow weary and become negligent in their prayer life even to the point of fainting. Perservering, or continuing in prayer, regardless of circumstances, is the underlying message in the parable of the unjust judge.

“Ought” – means we are under obligation, we are bound, and it is necessary for us to pray always.

“I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had absolutely no other place to go.” Abraham Lincoln

We are Commanded To Be People Who Pray

I Thessalonians 5:17 NIV – pray continually, (Never stop praying)

I Timothy 2:8 NIV  Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing

James 5:16 NIV – Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (effectual & fervant)

•Prayer produces Results

•Effectual – to be operative at work, to put forth with power

•Fervant – to be hot or to boil, tenacious in the spirit, heartfelt, earnest, persistent

None of us can justify a prayer less life. Listen, Prayer is the world’s greatest wireless connection.

The greatest value in prayer is not what you can get from God but what you learn & become

Our most sincere prayer should be: “Lord Teach us to Pray…” Luke 11:1 NIV

What is Prayer? Communication (dialogue) Communion (relationship) Channel for divine power (supernatural)

Why Prayer is an Expression of Faith?

Prayer must be a necessity, not an option! Not only is it a privilege but it’s a duty! It’s a blessing not boring!

1. In Order to keep from Fainting

Luke 18:1 NIV – Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

Fainting here is not a physical problem of a temporary loss of consciousness as a result of an inadequate blood to the brain. Fainting is a spiritual condition posing a constant danger to all believers unless they pray!

Faint – to be weak, to fail in heart, to be weary. To toil, to tire, to be sicken.

John 16:33 NIV “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

•Tribulation – Pressure, Oppression, stress, anguish, adversity, affliction, crushing, squeezing, distress

We live in a time where we are dealing with pressures, weariness, strife, problems, (job, $, Family) difficulties, oppression – enough to make even the strongest of people weary.

“If I should neglect prayer but a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith.” Martin Luther

Galatians 6:9 NIV Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Answer – Prayer is the one of the most rejuvenating, reviving, restful, experiences a person can engage in. Not so much for the body, because prayer is work, it’s action, it’s movement. But for the Mind, Soul, Spirit, and Heart of a person.

Psalm 17:5 NIV – My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled.

If you pray, there is nothing your faith cannot handle

2 Corinthians 4:1,16 NIV – Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 16  Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2. In Order to Overcome Satan

I John 5:4 NIV  for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

Satan not only attacks us but he also attacks our prayers in order to stop them!

Faith and prayer can override and supersede any circumstance, event, plan from Satan.

Our prayers not only bring personal victory over Satan; they can spare others for whom we pray from destruction. (Jesus’s prayer for Peter)

Luke 22:31-32 NIV –  “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

2 Corinthians 13:7 NIV – Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.

Satan is not just after you, but what is in you! Faith is tested by hardships, disappointments, and difficulties

I Peter 1:6-9 NIV –  In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

•Faith and Prayer have eternal value.

•What’s in You is greater than what’s against you! (I John 4:4)

•Gold – $480.25 an ounce, 16 ounces = 1 lb, If you weigh 200 lbs X that by $7,694 = $1,536,800.00

3. In Order to Maintain a Forgiving and Repentant Heart

Matthew 6:14-15 NIV – For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

•Obtaining forgiveness when we fail, is directly connected to our willingness to forgive others. Be quick to forgive.

Luke 17:1-4 NIV –   Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. So watch yourselves.“If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

•Whoever sins should repent! And we should forgive anyone who sins also. Even when others wronged us and do not ask our forgiveness, we should forgive anyway.

Through Prayer we are empowered to forgive and repent.

Mark 11:25 NIV 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

A prayerful life is a powerful life! A prayerless life is a powerless life!

Busting the Myths about God 

What if we have it all wrong about God? What if we’ve spent our lives seeing Him in one way when in reality, the diety we imagine is nothing like our God? Imagine leaving this world and meeting Him face to face only to discover that He isn’t at all like we’ve been told.

What if our well-intended but misguided religious education has contaminated our understanding of who God really is and has left us with a perspective about Him that hardly resembles the Father whom Jesus came to reveal?

Can you imagine such a thing? I can because it’s happening to me. I know I’ve had it wrong for a very long time, and I know I’m not alone. Our prevalent opinion about God is polluted.

(1 Timothy 1:3-4 NIV)  As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith

-(These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God.”)

There is a contaminated concept of God that has incapacitated us in our own grace walk and hampered our sincere efforts to see other people come to know and follow Christ.

Human inquiry into the divine has produced a vast pantheon of gods — from Ares to Zeus.

I Corinthians 15:34 MSG – Ignorance of God is a luxury you can’t afford in times like these

Myth – a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, especially one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature.

Greek Mythology – The Odyssey, The Iliad by Homer, Mt Olympus, Zeus, Hades, Athena, Apollo, Hermes, Prometheus, Atlas, The Clash of the Titans

God is A Big God

Isaiah 40:12 NIV – Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?

Size of the Universe 

The Earth – the surface is 196 million square miles; one of 9 planets revolving around the sun.

The distance from the earth to the moon is 240,000 miles

The Sun – It is the closest start to the earth it is 93 million miles away. 865,000 miles across. 109 times the size of the earth. You can fit 1.3 million earth’s inside the sun. The sun is considered an average star in comparison with others in the universe.

•It takes light from the sun traveling at the speed of light approximately 8 minutes to get to earth.

•Every object in our solar system revolves around the sun. SAY WOW!

The Galaxy – Milky Way. 

•200 to 400 billion stars

•200 discovered planets outside of our solar system

•hundred of billions of other galaxies

•2,500 years to count all the stars just in our galaxy.

1 light year – 5.8 trillion miles

The distance from the sun to the nearest star  – 4.3 light years

Isaiah 45:12 NIV – It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it.
My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.

Plato said, “Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards.”

Psalm 8:1-9 NIV – Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? The point is this: These incomparable and unfathomable wonders above tell us of a God who is quite simply…indescribable. But People have described Him in ways that is NOT Him

Augustine said, “The very order, disposition, beauty, change, and motion of the world and of all visible things silently proclaim that it could only have been made by God.” 

Common Myths about God 

Myth 1. God is angry. / Truth: God is Merciful

(Micah 7:18) “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.”

Christianity grounded in the confession that Jesus is the icon of the invisible God. I am in full sympathy with those who find a “Sinners In the Hands of An Angry God” Christianity repellent and in need of being jettisoned. I have pitched the theologies of an angry, retributive deity back into the dark sea of paganism. The good news is that buried under centuries of misconstrued Christianity there is a beautiful gospel just waiting to be discovered.

(Psalm 103:9-10) “He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.”

Do not freeze frame a certain time in your life and condemn your future based on that moment. God is not done with you!

Myth 2. God is distant. / Truth: God is Here

(Acts 17:26-28) From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[a] As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

(Luke 12:6 Message) “What’s the price of two or three pet canaries? Some loose change, right? But God never overlooks a single one. And he pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head!”

(Matt 6:31-33 NIV) So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Myth 3. God is Critical / Truth: God is Gracious

The Grace of God is inviting to the unrighteous and threatening to the self righteous. Andy Stanley

(Ephesians 2:8-9) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast.” 

•Grace is God giving people credit for something they didn’t do! 

(Romans 6:23) “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God’s power to save us is greater than our sin that condemns us”

(Psalm 145:8 NIV) – “The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.”

In fact, if you a person with high justice values….a person who wants consequences to always match violations…..you will definitely find the Grace of God OUTRAGEOUS! It’s Irrational & Incomprehensible

  1. Discover who God is.

(Ephesians 1:17) “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

What if God is like Jesus? What if the personality of God is identical to the personality of the man called Jesus of Nazareth portrayed in the Gospels? You can find who God is when you look at Jesus 

(I Timothy 3:16 Amp) “And great and important and weighty, we confess, is the hidden truth (the mystic secret) of godliness. He [[a]God] was made visible in human flesh, justified and vindicated in the [Holy] Spirit, was seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, [and] taken up in glory.”

Jesus made an audacious claim:

John 14:9 ESV  Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

What if that claim is true? Wouldn’t that be good news?

Jesus is the exact representation of God’s Nature

Hebrews 1:1-3 The MSG -Going through a long line of prophets, God has been addressing our ancestors in different ways for centuries. Recently he spoke to us directly through his Son. By his Son, God created the world in the beginning, and it will all belong to the Son at the end. This Son perfectly mirrors God, and is stamped with God’s nature. He holds everything together by what he says—powerful words!

C. S. Lewis said, “Let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.

He was not a man who became God, He is God who became a man

Colossians 1:15-18 (NLT)15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ…

What is God like? A punishing judge? A doting grandfather? A deadbeat dad? A vengeful warrior? Reject the toxic images of God in your own hearts and minds.

God is like Jesus. Jesus is the Message of God. Jesus is what God has to say. Jesus is the full and faithful witness to how God is to be understood. Jesus didn’t come to save us from God (as some deplorable theories would lead us to believe) — Jesus came to reveal God as savior. Jesus didn’t come to enable God to love us — Jesus came to reveal God as love. Jesus didn’t come to reconcile God to the world — Jesus came to reconcile the world to God.

Colossians 2:9 NLT – For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body

2. You’ll need to take a leap of faith.

(Luke 17:33 Message) “If you grasp and cling to life on your terms, you’ll lose it, but if you let that life go, you’ll get life on God’s terms.”

3. You’ll need to give it your all.

(Jeremiah 29:13) “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Everybody surrenders to something or someone in life. If not to God, you’ll surrender to popular opinion, money, resentment, or fear, to your own pride, lust, and ego.

Surrender is not the best way to live; it is the only way to live. Nothing else works. All other approaches lead to frustration, disappointment, and self-destruction.

So give it all to God: your past regrets, your present problems, your future ambitions, your fears, dreams, weaknesses, habits, hurts, and hang-ups. Put Christ in the driver’s seat of your life, and take your hands off the steering wheel. Don’t be afraid; nothing under his control can ever be out of control.

“If you don’t surrender to Christ, you surrender to chaos.” “So give yourselves completely to God” (James 4:7a NCV).

Psalm 100:1-4 NIV – Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his[a]; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name

Luke 19:37-40 ESV37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

What is worship?

Worship means to “attribute worth to an object”. Worship is not defined in the Bible but its meaning can be determined from the terms employed and the context of the passages. In the New Testament the most common word is ‘proskuneo’ which means to revere and is from two Greek words meaning ‘kiss towards’. Another word often used – ‘sebomai’ – is derived from a word meaning fear or revere.

John 4:23-24 NIV – Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

It doesn’t say we can worship God anyway we want, but we “must worship Him in spirit and in truth”. The word “must” makes it absolute. There is no other way we can worship God and be acceptable to Him. The word “must”, according to Webster, expresses “an obligation, a requirement, a necessity, a certainty, and something that must be done”. When “must” is used it means that it is not optional.

Since God is the object of our worship, He and He alone has the right to determine how we are to worship Him.

Jeremiah 10:23 NIV , Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.

We are not granted the option of directing our own ways in religion. God is the One who we look to for guidance and direction in our lives. The worship God has prescribed is the only way we can be pleasing to Him in this life

example: “You worship God your way, I will worship God my way” – There is NO my way. Only God’s Way

•Worshiping “in spirit” means that you mean it; that you’re worshiping inside out, not just going through the motions.

•Worshiping “in truth” means that you’re worshiping the true God and not some idol you’ve created. And it means you’re being truthful with your words and thoughts that you bring to worship; you’re not trying to put on a religious act to impress someone.

Throughout history, Christians have agreed that several key elements are important in worship:

1) Praise. Giving honor and glory to God with words, songs or art.

2) Confession. Worship means acknowledging who God is (holy and good) and who we are (not so holy and not so good) in relation to him. This means admitting and confessing our sin, and accepting God’s forgiveness.

3) Prayer. In worship, we speak directly to God about what’s on our minds (our needs and the needs of others) and what’s on God’s mind (his desire for love and justice and redemption in the world).

4) Hearing God’s Word. This means reading the Scripture. It also means listening for what God is saying to you through the music, the sermon and everything that happens in worship.

5) Remembering Christ’s sacrifice. This is most clearly done by taking Communion. Thinking about how God saved us from sin is at the very center of our worship.

6) Responding to God’s love. Worship doesn’t end when the service is over. Worship means we leave the service so aware of God’s greatness that we find ways to obey and honor and serve him throughout the week.

How Should We Worship?

Remember: We Must Have a Theocentric View of Worship

Worship is not about us! We are not at the center of worship with our styles, preferences, song choices, etc… It’s not about what we want and what we can get.  Worship is about GOD.

We must be careful that we do not exclude certain forms of worship simply because we are uncomfortable with them.  Rather, we should seek to understand why we are uncomfortable & make adjustments that will challenge our comfort zone

Psalm 103:1 ESV – Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me,  bless his holy name!

Halel – (root for Hallelujah) to rave, boast, to enjoy, celebrate. to audibly praise the Lord, to be clamorously foolish

Psalm 22:26 NIV The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him—may your hearts live forever!

Psalm 113:1 ESV – Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord!

Yadah – means to worship with raised hands, to throw out the hands. Being active not passive

Psalm 63:4 ESV  So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands

Psalm 134:2 ESV – Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord!

Barak – to bless by kneeling or bowing in a worshipful attitude and declare God as our total source of blessing, prosperity, power, strength, and victory. (an expectation to receive that blessing from God)

Psalm 96:5 ESV – Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

I Chronicles 29:20 ESV– Then David said to all the assembly, “Bless the Lord your God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, and bowed their heads and paid homage to the Lord and to the king.

Zamar – making music to God with strings.

Psalm 92:1 NIV – “It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High.”

Psalm 33:1-2 ESV – Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright.2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!

Shabach – to address in a loud tone, to shout unto the Lord. A loud vocal expression of Victory, crying out to God in a loud praise.

Psalm 35:27 ESV – Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of his servant!

Psalm 47:1 ESV – Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!

Tehillah – exuberant singing. Throughout scriptures we are to celebrate audibly and we can do that by singing. Whether you have a voice of an angel or a bullfrog – SING!

Psalm 34:1 NIV “I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.”

Psalm 30:4 ESV – Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name

One Result of Praise & Worship To God

1. Our Spiritual Enemies (problems) are Silenced

Silence – To cause to fail, to put down, to take away. When we Worship God we cause the enemy to fail!

2 Chronicles 20:21-22 ESV  And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy attire, as they went before the army, and say,“Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.” 22 And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed.

God’s Mercy is in the destruction of our spiritual enemies (Problems)

Psalms 143:12 ESV – And in your steadfast love you will cut off my enemies, and you will destroy all the adversaries of my soul, for I am your servant.

Your Praise To God changes your Position from being under problems to being over them

I Peter 2:1-5, 9 NIV – Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Lamentations 3:19-26 NIV – I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. 

There are no hopeless situations. There are only people who have grown hopeless about them.

Every family goes through difficult times. Every family faces a crisis (addiction, death, mental illness, rebellion, sickness, loss, depression, set backs, challenges,). It’s not “if” but “when.” How do you make it through the worst of times? How do you not only survive, but thrive in the midst of it? How do you make sure that difficulties do not destroy?

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 ESV – We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

I. THE FACTS about Family Life (But remember – Life is hard but God is Good)

1. Difficult Times in Families are a fact of life. 

(John 16:33) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

•Tribulation – Pressure, Oppression, stress, anguish, adversity, affliction, crushing, squeezing, distress

•We will not avoid trouble in this life – 2 Tim. 3:1 – Perilous (harsh, savage, difficult, dangerous, painful, hard to deal with)

2. Difficult Times happen to all Families.

(Matthew 5:45) “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good,  and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” 

•”Life is 10 percent what happens to you, and 90 percent how you choose to deal with it” Lou Holtz

I Thessalonians 2:18 NIV For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way.

Hindered – Break up of a road to make it impassable for travelers. The result is that the trip is hindered, delayed, postponed, & inconvenient.

Key – Paul NEVER backed down! Never Stopped! He kept moving forward! Refuse to be dominated by blockades, hindrances, tough times, and attacks!

Your struggle is proof that you have not been defeated!

3. Difficult Times won’t last forever.

2 Corinthians 4:17  NIV – “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 

•You are going to outlast it!  Get up and Go on! 

Psalm 30:5 NIV –“Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”

4.  Difficult Times can be good for the Family. 

(1 Peter 1:7) “These have come so that your faith–of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire–may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” 

•Faith is tested by hardships,  disappointments, and difficulties

•“God who foresaw your tribulation, has specifically armed you to go through it, not without pain, but without stain.” CS Lewis

2 Corinthians 6:4 NIV  Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses;

•Some people go into the furnace of trouble and it burns them; others go in, and the experience builds them

Romans 8:28 NIV “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his  purpose.” 

•Every Storm is a school, Every Trial is a teacher, Every experience is an education, Every difficulty is for your development.

II.  2 Strategic Keys That Guarantee Family Victory

You are engaged in a Spiritual War! Spiritual warfare is that conflict being waged in the invisible, spiritual realm that is being manifest in the visible, physical realm.

I John 4:4 NIV – You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Your trouble is Satan’s desperation to stop you! But Who is in you is greater than What’s against you! 

Stay battle ready! When things go badly, it’s not the end of the world. When things go well, it’s not the end of the battle.

2 Corinthians 10:3-4 – For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.

•When we engage in the spiritual battle, we don’t fight with the weapons of this world. We don’t fight with nuclear bombs, or machine guns, or army tanks, or a 22, or numbchucks, or a slingshot. Okay? Instead, we engage in this battle with prayer and by faith and using God’s word.

Ephesians 6:10-12 -Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

1. Prayer

Prayer is the way we write the future. It’s the difference between letting things happen and making things happen!

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV –  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”

We have 2 options – We can Panic or Pray -You decide – Martin Luther said, “Pray and let God worry”

“Oh what peace we often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bare; All because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer” Joseph Scriven

Remember this  – You never be a perfect parent, but you can be a praying parent. 

Ill.—little boys staying overnight in backyard in a tent. Dad listened to them talk… “my daddy knows the mayor!”/ “governor!”/then he heard the voice of his own little boy say, “that’s nothin’, my daddy knows God!” (top that!) They said, he does not! “does too!” How do you know? “I heard him talkin’ to him just this morning!” 

When you face unexpected problems and pressures, when you have a crisis, who do you turn to? God says,”Turn to Me first when you’ve got a problem.” Many people, when they’re in a tight situation, prayer is the last resort, not the first option. They do everything they can physically to try to correct the problem then they say, “I guess now all we can do is pray.” Like it must really be hopeless! Prayer should not be your last resort, it should be your first option.

Make God your first resort in difficulty. He says He is an ever present help a refuge in time of need. God is waiting. He commands us to turn to Him first.

Psalm. 50:15 “Call upon Me in your day of trouble and I will deliver you and you will honor Me.”

Some people get embarrassed and think, I don’t talk to God much when times are good and I don’t want to bother him with my problems. God says, “Bother Me. It’s no bother. I can handle your and every other person’s problems at the same time. Bring it to me. Don’t carry it all yourself.”

“We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” Oswald Chambers

When we pray we give God legal invitation to bring His will to pass. His will is always accomplished through obedience in prayer.

Luke 18:1 NIV – Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up

I Thessalonians 5:7 NLT – Never stop praying

Prayer is always the will of God – Don’t Give Up, Get Frustrated, disappointed, or lose hope – Praying is what we do in our time, and the answer happens in God’s time

One prayer can change ANYTHING. one prayer can change EVERYTHING

2. Faith

This is your position above your difficulties

Hebrews 11:1-3 ESV – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. (Genesis 1:1-3, John 1:3)

Verse 1 Amplified – Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, [a]the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].

Faith is a spiritual force based on the eternal laws of God that can change things in the natural.

I John 5:4 ESV – For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Overcomes (Nikos) – To conquer, Champion of the games

Faith is… To have trust or assurance, confidence, conviction, belief, reliance in what God says. Trust that produces action. Faith is a living force, drawn from the living word, to produce living results.

Authentic faith does not deny the obstacles of life, but rather declares God is greater than the obstacles

Mark 9:23 NIV ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

There is NO Situation in your family too difficult for God to handle or turn around! 

“Faith does not operate in the realm of the possible. There is no glory for God in that which is humanly possible. Faith begins where man’s power ends.”- George Muller

I Timothy 1:18-20 ESV – This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

•860 AD – Nero was blaming christians for burning down Rome, Disciples were being killed, false teaching was being taught.

•Holding Faith – Kutecheo – To hold on with a firm grip; desperate hold

•Paul Was telling Timothy  – HOLD ON! DON’T LET GO & Shipwreck your faith!

Hebrews 10:23 ESV – Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. (Jacob)

Holding faith connects you to the Power of God!

Revelation 2:25 ESV – Only hold fast what you have until I come.

Hebrews 10:36-39 NIV – You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For,“In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”[a] 38 And, “But my righteous[b] one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.”[c] 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Ending: 

Mark 11:22-24 ESV22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever SAYS to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received[a] it, and it will be yours.

In summary, Through Prayer & Faith, the following 4 things are promised to you:

  1. Nothing shall be impossible to you
  2. Ask what you will, and it will be done
  3. Ask anything in Jesus’ name, and He will do it!
  4. Whatsoever things you desire when you pray, You will have them!

Never put a question mark or a period where God has put a comma! He is still working!

Mark 5:2-8 NIV – When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”

Researcher George Barna posed that question to a survey group and found that only 40% of Americans (2 out of 5) believe that Satan is a living being.

In his book, “What Americans Believe,” he revealed that 69% of Catholics, and 65% of mainline Protestant church-goers believe the notion of Satan is only symbolic of evil.

Satan’s best defense is the successful delusion of man into thinking he does not really exist.

Every type of religion has its concept of good and evil, except Satanism & humanism

Satanism – innate wickedness; obsession with or affinity for evil; specifically :  worship of Satan marked by the travesty of Christian rites

Humanism – a system of values and beliefs that is based on the idea that people are basically good and that problems can be solved using reason instead of religion. a philosophy that rejects supernaturalism. It’s godless. Its the foundation of atheism. man is the center of all things. No absolute truth.

Main source of evil today comes from Satan and his fall

Isaiah 14:12-14  NIV – How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly… I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”

•Lucifer (daystar, son of the morning) He is one of three archangels mentioned in Scripture. He was created by God just as all angels were, but his role was different from the other angelic hosts. Lucifer was referred to as the ‘covering angel.’ Just as the cherubim covered the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant, Lucifer was established by God to be the angel of worship, one whose ministry surrounded the heart of heaven. Lucifer was created to dwell eternally in the throne room of heaven, in the very presence of God

•Lucifer became Satan when he tried to make himself not only equal with God but as one above God

•Pride, greed, selfish ambition was his downfall – 5 times he said “I will” – Main problem today when people fall.

His names and titles – Prince and power of the air, Angel of light, Accuser of the brethren, Prince of Darkness, god of this world, thief, wicked one, roaring lion, serpent, murderer, dragon, corrupter, beelzebub, deceiver

(Quote) Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty attitude before a fall”

Revelation 12:7-9  NIV – And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down-that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

What are Demons? 

Demons are evil/fallen angels who follow Satan instead of God. When Satan fell out of heaven, the demons fell with him instead of staying in their place as God’s ministers of good. Somehow, evil was found in them. The term demon comes from the Greek “daimon.”  Demons are found in the New Testament as being able to possess people (Matt.  8:28-34; Mark 5:1-4) and animals (Matt. 8:32).  They are very strong (Mark 5:4).  They are also called unclean spirits (Luke 8:29), seem to have a heirarchy of rulership in their demonic realm (Matt. 12:24-27), and can have sacrifices offered to them (1 Cor. 10:20).  Also, they will be judged in the future (Matt. 8:29).  They cannot be redeemed

WHAT DO DEMONS DO?

• DEMONS INFLUENCE THE LEADERS OF NATIONS.

Daniel 10:13 NIV – But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.

  • DEMONS DESIRE TO INFLICT SUFFERING ON YOU.

Matthew 17:15, 17-18 NIV – “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water… [Jesus said], “Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

• DEMONS SCHEME TO LURE YOU AWAY FROM GOD.

1 Timothy 4:1 NIV – The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

  • DEMONS WANT TO PARALYZE YOU WITH FEAR.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 NKJV – For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

BATTLING THE DARKNESS

1. Demons are subject to the Name of Jesus.

Luke 10:17-20 NIV –  The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Mark 16:17-18 NIV –  “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Philippians 2:10 NIV – “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”

2. WE DON’T FIGHT WITH OUR POWER BUT WITH GOD’S AUTHORITY.

Matthew 10:1 NIV –  (Jesus) called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

Authority doesn’t beg; authority doesn’t ask; authority commands! We are not told to ask God to cast out demons, we are told to do it ourselves! We are not told to beg demons to come out, we are told to CAST them out!

James 4:7-8 NIV – Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you…

•resist – (military term) oppose, withstand, actively work against

•The greatest power you have against demons is your humility, patience, and persistent pressure of resistance

Authority is exercised through our spoken word. The power of life and death are in the spoken word: Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

Matthew 8:16 NIV, “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word…”

3. Have Faith in God

I John 5:4 NIV – for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

Faith is the apex of your dominion. Faith is simply knowing God. TL Osborne once said, “When you know who God is, what God has and what God can do, then you find out who you are, what you haven and what you can do.” Then it is exposed what your enemy has and what he can do, who he is, what he has, and what he can do, which is nothing. He is dethroned, disrobed, dismantled, defeated by God!

Mark 11:22-24 NIV “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[a] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Summary

Life is inevitable filled with all manner of struggles on a daily basis. It is critical that we understand who the instigators really are. Evil people are usually little more than pawns under the influence of satanic beings. Therefore, its imperative that we do not war according the flesh but rather utilize our spiritual weapons. It guarantees our victory!

Romans 8:37-39 NIV – “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
