FaceTime with God Pt.2 – It Must Become a Priority

Exodus 33:11 NIV The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. 

2 Corinthians 3:16-18 Message Whenever, though, they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to- face! They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him. 

Priorities – A priority is anything to which we give first place, in order of importance. It is that which is most productive and beneficial to us. The things that matter most.

If you are too busy for FaceTime with God, then you’re too busy.

”I just don’t have the time” is the excuse we hear so often. Every person has exactly the same amount of time each week – 168 hours. 

-You make time for things that are important

-You don’t have time for everything – you must make time for things that count. It’s not a matter of time, it’s a matter of priorities.

Put God first in your life and day and you will have more time! Don’t allow anything to rob you of your time with God. It’s your number 1 spiritual priority.

“We don’t drift in good directions. We discipline and prioritize ourselves there.”  Andy Stanley

Matthew 22:37-38 ESV And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment.

Phillip Yancey said, “Only in prayer can we learn to love God with all our heart, mind and soul.”

Psalm 5:1-3 NIV “Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my king and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.”

Why People don’t make FaceTime with God a Priority

  1. Not sure you know how to pray
  2. Get bored or distracted while trying to pray
  3. Think your requests are too small for God
  4. Not sure your prayers will make a difference

Do you struggle with Prayer? Don’t pray enough? Someone once said, You will when you need too

Prayer should be our first language not a foreign language. It should be our first response, not our last resort. 

(In Matthew 6, Jesus give us 3 “When’s” (habits)- When You Pray, When You Fast, When You Give)

Luke 18:1 NIV  Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

“Ought” – means we are under obligation, we are bound, and it is necessary for us to pray always.

NOT bc its the religious thing to do, NOT to please God, NOT to be saved and go to Heaven – It’s bc we have no other choice

CS Lewis said, “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time – waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God – It changes me”

What is Prayer?

  1. Communication (dialogue)
  2. Communion (relationship)
  3. Channel for divine power (supernatural)

What it accomplishes:

  1. Draws you closer to God
  2. It brings answers, it creates (John 14:14, Hebrews 11:1-3)
  3. Brings blessings to others (I Tim. 2:1)
  4. Reveals (Jeremiah 33:3)

Our most sincere prayer should be: “Lord Teach us to Pray…” Luke 11:1 NIV

Prayer is learned – We learn to PRAY by:

•Praying The Prayers (ACTS 2:42)  •Meditating on Scripture  •Praying with others  •Reading about Prayer

• We need a Liturgy –  It means worship or minister. It means work of the people. Worship and devotion is not a kind of spiritual entertainment, worship is a work of spiritual formation. Liturgy is simply your pattern of worship and prayer. Some people say Liturgy is dead and dry? Brian Zhand in his book “Water to Wine” said, “Liturgy is neither alive nor dead. Liturgy is either true or false. What is alive or dead is the worshiper. So what we need is a true liturgy and a living worshiper.”

Phillip Yancey said – “If prayer stands as the place where God and human beings meet, then I must learn about prayer.”

Why FaceTime with God Must Be a Priority

1. I Can Depend Upon God

Deuteronomy 4:7 NIVWhat other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?

John 15:5-7 NIV “If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit, but apart from me, you can do nothing. If anyone doesn’t remain in me, he’s like a branch that’s thrown away and withers. Such branches are picked up and thrown into the fire and burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you can ASK whatever you wish and it will be given to you. “

“Heaven is full of answers to prayer for which no one ever bothered to ask.” – Billy Graham

The tragedy of our day is not unanswered prayer but is unoffered prayer

God will either give you what you ask, or something far better. 

Prayer expresses our trust in God (Matthew 6:9- Our Father…) 

“We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” Oswald Chambers 

Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

 “Quit questioning God and start trusting Him!” Joel Osteen

Disappointments are just God’s way of saying “I have Got Something better” Be Patient….Have Faith….Trust God….

It’s not an option, it’s like breathing is to our bodies- LIFE.

Martin Luther said, “To be a christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”

2. I Discover Friendship with God

John 15:15-16 NIV “I no longer call you servants because a servant doesn’t know his master’s business. Instead I have called you friends for everything I’ve learned from my Father, I’ve made known to you. You didn’t choose me, but I chose you to go and bear fruit — fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”

One of life’s greatest privilege is the right to use the name of Jesus in Prayer

Because we have Friendship with God, God promises:

1. To hear us (Jer. 33:3 / Isa. 65:24)

2. To Help us (Mt.7:7-8 / Mark 11:24)

3. If there is a need, God will meet it (Phil. 4:19)

4. If there is a burden, God will lift it (I Peter 5:7)

5. If there is a sin, God will forgive it (I John 1:9)

Romans 5:10-11 NLT For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

3. I Can Deliver My Anxieties to God

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.

Remember: God has free unlimited anytime minutes

We have 2 options – We can Panic or Pray -You decide

“Oh what peace we often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bare; All because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer” Joseph Scriven

I Peter 5:7 NIV “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Anxiety – state of uneasiness, apprehension about future uncertainties

Worry – Strangle or choke, suffocating, feeling we experience in time of fear.

-dog with a bone; “worries” on it, gnaws, bury it, dig it up, growl at you

-Some people’s calling in life – they want to always examine what can go wrong

-Martin Luther said, “Pray and let God worry”

We are not designed to carry stress, anxiety, or worryRemember this  – The shadow of a dog never bit anyone

When Should Have FaceTime with God? 

I Thessalonians 5:17 NIV – pray continually, (Never stop praying)

Daniel 6:10 ESV – When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.

The specific time has to do with when you should have your quiet time and how long it should be. The general rule is this: The best time is when you are at your best! Give God the best part of your day—when you are the freshest and most alert. Don’t try to serve God with your leftovers (leftover time). Remember, too, that your best time may be different from someone else’s.

Early Morning? In the morning our minds are uncluttered from the day’s activities. Our thoughts are fresh, we’re rested, tensions have not yet come to us, and it’s usually the quietest time

Mark 1:35 NIV  Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

In the Evening? If you are a night person, have your time with God in the evening. The point is God deserves your full attention, not your leftovers. Whatever time you set, be consistent in it. Schedule it on your calendar;

Matthew 14:23 ESV –  And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,

The Call to prayer – Church bells & the Muslim Adhan (islamic temple next to my hotel while in china – 5am, 5 times a day)

In the first century church after Christ went to heaven – ancient christian practice instructed believers to pray the Lord’s prayer 3 times daily (morning, noon, and night). (The Didache)

Luke 6:12 ESV In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.

FaceTime with God is simple, not mysterious. But the impact it can make on your life as you do it consistently is greater and deeper than any other way you can spend your time.

(Luke 6:46-49 MSG) “Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on. “If you work the words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who dug deep and laid the foundation of his house on bedrock. When the river burst its banks and crashed against the house, nothing could shake it; it was built to last. But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a dumb carpenter who built a house but skipped the foundation. Joseph’s story takes up half of the book of Genesis  – 11th born son of Jacob who is the grandson of Abraham – Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Joseph

Joseph had a dream – God spoke to him & life went in another direction – His world got shaken up

Message dedicated to those who feel your life isn’t going how God planned it Or how you planned it – Wrong direction – Ready to check out

Joseph – Went from privileged son – to the pit of slavery – to the palace of Egypt

For when life gets shaken and isn’t turning out the way you had planned… “Don’t give up on your dreams.”

Been a handful of times I’ve wanted to quit

At seventeen years old – Joseph called the family together to share something

(Genesis 37:5-7, 19-20)  Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.  He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”  “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other.  “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

When Things Are Shaky, Don’t Give Up on Your Dream…

  1. Even if you didn’t start off well.

Many define their potential off of what they see in the rear view mirror

The accuser of the brethren Satan always reminding us of yesterday

Paul had a horrible resume – Giving the order to kill Christians – You’re persecuting me God says  – Bible is full of people with HORRIBLE resumes

Regardless of your yesterdays God can still use you

We Dream of a church that believes in people. We dream of a church where we allow people to change their history

(1 Timothy 1:12-13 NIV “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.  Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.”

God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.

Don’t give up…

  1. Even if those closest don’t support it.

Even if your family, friends don’t understand – Joseph’s family didn’t understand

Even Jesus wasn’t accepted in his own hometown

“Isn’t that Mary and Joseph’s boy?” – He did no miracles in that town

(Mark 6:3-4 NIV) “Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.”

Joseph like Jesus faced massive rejection

So…Don’t give up on your dream…

  1. Even if your journey is full of surprises.

When you get a dream from God it never goes to A-B in a straight line

Zigs – Zags – Up and Down

Sure he was thinking – this isn’t what the dream looked like – Dreams have critical intersections – faced with a dilemma

Give up – or go on – based on how Joseph felt…Misunderstood by his family – give up? Sold into slavery by his brothers – give up? Living in a strange country far from home – give up? Given favor in Potiphar’s house (Egyptian slave owner) – go on! Falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife – give up? Thrown into prison – give up? Put in charge of all the prisoners – go on! Forgotten by the chief cupbearer – give up? Remained in prison two years – give up? Interpreted Pharoh’s dream – go on! Became second in command – go on!

The truth is your life will look the same way

Joseph had twice as many give ups as go on’s

What will you do in the give up moment? Don’t Quit

What do you do – How do you make it? – Joseph had the assurance that the Lord was with me

(Romans 8:28 NIV)  “And we know that in all things (good or bad) God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Don’t give up on your dream…

  1. Even if it takes a long time to realize it.

Clearly, Joseph rose to the top, but it took a while to happen

Joseph was 17 years old when he was sold into slavery (Genesis 37:2).

He was 30 when Pharaoh promoted him (Genesis 41:46)

He had been in prison for two years before that (Genesis 41:1)

So he was in Potiphar’s house for 11 years.

It took 11 years for the full measure of God’s blessing to be accomplished in Joseph’s life.

(Habakkuk 2:3 LB)  “These things I plan won’t happen right away.  Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled.  If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass.  Just be patient!  They will not be overdue a single day!”

Why is this? God is way more interested in your character then your comfort

(Jeremiah 17:10 LB) “The Lord searches our hearts and examines our deepest motives so he can give to each person his right reward, according to how he has lived.” 

Joseph’s Words of Encouragement

  • “Focus on what happens in you not to you.”

This spiritual principle could save your life & save you mileage

God is working character inside of us & what we are going through is the thing he is using to facilitate that

You have a role in how fast it goes depending on how fast you learn

We tend to focus more on what’s happening to us not in us

“God make this go away” Wrong prayer

“God what do you want me to learn through this?” Right prayer

(1st Peter 1:6-7 NLT) So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while. These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold — and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

You cannot control what happens around you, but you can control what happens in you.

  • “Your response to offense determines your future.”

Joseph has a chance to get his brothers back

Family coming for food – Joseph knows but family doesn’t know him

Some people live their whole life this way – It’s not worth it

Joseph’s brothers say, don’t kill us…Look at Joseph’s response

(Genesis 50:20-21)  “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…”

Some of you need to walk out forgiveness in your life – That resentment is destroying you & you know it

(Job 21:23-25 NLT)  One person dies in prosperity, completely comfortable and secure,24 the picture of good health, vigorous and fit. 25 Another person dies in bitter poverty, never having tasted the good life.

Will you leave your pain in the past to follow your dreams, or will you let these hurts steal your hope for a better life?

  • “Every dream has tough times but remember God is always with you.”

He is there – He is with you – May not feel it but he is there

When you’re down to nothing – God is up to something

(Isaiah 43:3 ESV) When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

(Matthew 28:20 NIV) And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Salvation Call – Prayer

Jesus, forgive me for all of my sins, I give my life to you, make me brand new. I believe you died for me so that I can live. Fill me with your spirit that I would know you, & serve you with my life. My life is not my own, I give it to you. Thank you for loving me, in Jesus name, Amen!

The Call To Prayer 

May the Lord Almighty grant and those I love a peaceful night and a perfect end.

†OPENING From the rising of the sun to its setting, Let the name of the Lord be praised. YOU, O LORD, ARE MY LAMP. MY GOD, YOU MAKE MY DARKNESS BRIGHT. Light and peace in Jesus Christ our Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

Psalm 63:7-8 When I think of you upon my bed, through the night watches I will recall that you indeed are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. 

O God make speed to save me, O Lord make haste to help me. I need you.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me.

Confession of Sin

Almighty God, My heavenly Father, I have sinned against you, through my own fault in thought, and in word, and deed, in what I have done and what I have left undone. Concluding Prayer

O Lord, all treasures of wisdom and truth and holiness are stored up in your boundless being. Grant that through our constant fellowship with you, those graces of Christian character may more and more take shape within me:

The grace of a thankful and uncomplaining heart;

The grace to await your timing patiently and to answer your call promptly;

The grace of courage whether in suffering or in danger;

The grace to endure any hardship in the fight against evil;

The grace of boldness to stand up for what is right;

The grace of being adequately prepared for any temptation;

The grace of physical discipline;

The grace of truthfulness;

The grace to treat others as I would like them to treat me;

The grace of sensitivity, that I may refrain from hasty judgement;

The grace of silence, that I may refrain from thoughtless speech;

The grace of forgiveness toward all who have wronged me;

The grace of tenderness toward all who are weaker than myself;

The grace of faithfulness in continuing to desire that you will answer these prayers.

And now, O God, give me a quiet mind as I lie down to rest. Dwell in my thoughts until sleep overtakes me. Do not let me be worried by the small anxieties of this life. Do not let any troubled dreams disturb me, so that I may wake refreshed an ready for all that tomorrow brings. In Jesus Name, Amen!

Daring Faith Pt.4 – Waiting on God

Isaiah 40:28-31 ESV – Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth; He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29  He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

  • Few things make us more irritable than having to wait. in traffic …a  waiting room .. a line at Disneyland…restaurants… =long lines

Waiting is perhaps the hardest discipline of the Christian life. Most of us hate to wait. I know I do. Probably all of us are waiting for something at this very moment.

Waiting for your grades.

Waiting to graduate.

Waiting to be accepted to college.

Waiting for your first job offer.

Waiting to see if the bank will give you a loan.

Waiting for the right time to start a family.

Waiting for your loved ones to come to Christ.

Waiting to meet the right guy or the right girl.

Waiting to be married.

Waiting to find out what God wants you to do.

Waiting for someone to buy your house.

Waiting for your prayers to be answered.

Waiting for your husband to come home from a business trip.

Waiting for your prayers to be answered

We all have to wait whether we like it or not. Truth be told, most of life is waiting.

For instance, when you watch a football game on TV, most of the time nothing happens. By rule the actual game takes 60 minutes to play, but the average NFL telecast lasts three hours. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, in the average NFL telecast the actual playing of football takes up eleven minutes. If that’s true, then what happens the rest of the time?  In that three-hour block of time, you have . . .

60 minutes for commercials.

75 minutes when the players are standing around.

17 minutes for replays.

After a few other miscellaneous things are thrown in (such as crowd shots and talking heads in the booth and shots of the cheerleaders), what you are left with is . . .11 minutes of actual football.

– Technology has made us more impatient- expect it FAST!

And yet waiting is an important part of life & character development. We learn things while WAITING- – learn no other way.

Every child must learn difference between; “No”  & “Not Yet”

Our inability to wait is the source of so many problems = Debt…  broken hearts   

– Ever been in a hurry when God wasn’t?   Frustrating. You can rush your kids, but you cant rush God!

Some of you are  waiting for God ….to open a door….answer a prayer  ….give direction…  meet a need…give direction…   heal a relationship… remove a pain

Obvious that God has his own timetable.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT  Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.

WHAT TO REMEMBER WHILE WAITING ON GO

1. REMEMBER THERE’S A NATURAL DELAY BETWEEN PLANTING and HARVESTING!  “season”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-5 NIV – “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 

ILL: Many have planted seeds of faith – you wont harvest immediately (Gen 8:22)WRITE “ I reap in a different season than I sow”

Waiting quietly, patiently & expectantly is faith!

2.  REMEMBER THERE’S AN UNSEEN BATTLE GOING ON.

A Spirit war between good & evil.   God & Satan    angels & demons and We’re caught in the middle

Ephesians 6:12 NIV – For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

• Satan throws darts of doubt & discouragement WHILE you wait

We don’t know much about this “unseen battle” but amazing glimpse in Daniel that show why some of our prayers are delayed:

DANIEL 10:11-13 NLT “ And the man said to me, “Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you.” When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling.12 Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer. 13 But for twenty-one days the spirit prince[a] of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels,[b] came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia

Write: A delay is not a denial!

3.  REMEMBER GOD IS PREPARING ME FOR HIS BLESSING

God usually has a bigger, better idea in mind. He needs to get you ready for this bigger blessing;  First, he wants to strengthen your faith:

1 Peter 1:6-7 (NLT) “There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while. These troubles test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure, just as fire tests and purifies gold—and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold.” 

•Some of you are going thru the fire right now, Keep going!

Write:  Waiting is always a test!

Paul compares waiting on God to pregnancy:

Rom.8:24-28   (Mes) “Waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We don’t see what is enlarging us, but the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy. Meanwhile, when we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He prays in us and for us… He knows us far better than we know ourselves, and knows our pregnant condition… That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.”

Waiting never rejection Every timeI thought I was being rejected from something good, God was actually re directing me to something better. 

4.  REMEMBER I’M IN GOOD COMPANY WHEN WAITING ON GOD 

Millions of saints before you have sat in God’s Waiting Room

Hebrews 11:2 NLT – Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation.

 “People who lived in the past became famous because of their faith.” ((ICB) 

Hannah waited years to have a baby

Joseph – 14 yrs-in prison- a crime he didnt commit

Moses – 40 yrs in desert for his life purpose

Abraham – 100 yrs for a son thru Sarah

Noah – 120 yrs before rain

Jacob  – 20 Years

David – 12 years

Jesus waited 30 years

God waited 1000s of yrs to send Jesus!

Hebrews 6:15 NLT “Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.”  Leads to 5th remember

5.  REMEMBER GOD ALWAYS KEEPS HIS PROMISES!

Unlike others, you can count on God to come through.

So don’t focus on what U CAN’T do, Focus on what God CAN do!

Promises help you do that “Anything is possible if you have faith!”

Habakkuk 2:3 NLT – This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.

•“At the time I have decided, my words WILL come true. You can trust what I say about the future. It may take a long time, but keep on waiting— it will happen!”

– About 7000 promises

– God’s waiting room is a great time to memorize scripture

•We have to trust God even when His answer is “Wait”

SONG: ’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His Word; Just to rest upon His promise, And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!” Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er; Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!Oh, for grace to trust Him more!

4 THINGS TO DO WHILE WAITING ON GOD: W.A.I.T. 

1. WRITE DOWN THE LESSONS I’M LEARNING   

Waiting is always the season to LISTEN & LEARN from God!

– God has some things he want to teach you first!

More interested in your character…

– But you’ll forget the lessons unless you write them down!

ILL: Like Moses- some of you are wandering in the wilderness!

Not an accident!    Waiting in wilderness for a purpose!

Write: The way to the Promised Land is thru the wilderness!

Numbers 33:2 (NLT) “At the Lord’s direction, Moses kept a written record of their progress.”

Keep a journal in while waiting! Write down every little thing God says to you!

Little lessons lead to Big successes”

Deuteronomy 11:2 NLT – Keep in mind that I am not talking now to your children, who have never experienced the discipline of the Lord your God or seen his greatness and his strong hand and powerful arm.

•“Remember what you have learned about the Lord through your experiences with him.”  

If you don’’t remember God has to take you there again!  Painful!

A good prayer to pray…Psalm 119:33 MSG “God, teach me lessons for living so I can stay the course.”

2. ACT AS THOUGH I ALREADY HAVE IT

We typically waste time 3 ways  when waiting :

We wonder- Why, Lord why?

      worry– How, Lord, how?

      whine = When, Lord, when?  Complaining never moves God

Instead ACT in FAITH

Mark 11:24 ESV Jesus said “I Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received[a] it, and it will be yours.”

ILL: Every pregnant woman does this

– She carries inside her the promise of a baby.

Even tho she can’t see it, she knows that baby is there!

– So she starts preparing its arrival… eats…nursery, clothes

ALL IN ADVANCE!

They don’t call it “Expecting” for nothing! She KNOWS that the baby is coming- it’s just a matter of time! & She’ll wait as long as it takes!

Write: Waiting is not passivity!  Do all you can to get ready!

Difference: waiting passively & waiting expectantly in faith

Get prepared & Act as Though

Romans 4:17 NIV “As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”[a] He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not”

ILL – Changed Abram’s name long before it happened! “I have made you a father of many nations.” 

3. IMITATE THE HABITS THAT GROW STRONG FAITH

Use the time while you are waiting to develop personal maturity!

1 Peter 1:6-7 (NIV) We do not want you to become lazy, but to IMITATE those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” 

Philippians 4:9 (NLT) Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

WRITE: DON’T put my life on hold!

Waiting is NOT inactivity.. idleness… laziness ..passivity.. apathy

 WAITING IS THE TIME TO DEVELOP HABITS & SKILLS!

4 FAITH-BUILDING HABITS

o KEEP ON PRAYING 

Mt. 7:7 (NLT)“Keep on asking, and you WILL be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and you WILL find. Keep on knocking, and the door WILL be opened!”

o KEEP ON SERVING

Rom. 12:11   (NLT) “Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically.”    This sharpens your skills

“Wait” = also means “SERVE!”  waiter/ lady in waiting

Don’t wait for s significant ministry. Make it one!

o KEEP ON SOWING

Ecclesiastes 11:6 NLT –  Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you don’t know if profit will come from one activity or another—or maybe both.

•“Keep on sowing your seed, for you never know which ones will grow–perhaps they all will!”  (LB) 

o KEEP ON BELIEVING

2 Timothy 3:14 NIV – But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,

          •“You must keep on believing the things you have been taught. You know they are true.” (LB) 

       POINT; Stay active!  God can’t direct a parked car!

4. TRUST GOD instead of PANICKING 

Two facts you can trust:

1. God is never in a hurry.  2. God is never late. •His timing is perfect.

Anytime He seems late – He’s preparing you for a miracle!

ILL: Mary and Martha in the Bible had a brother named Lazarus. Lazarus was one of Jesus’ best friends. Lazarus got deathly sick and he lived in a city called Bethany. Bethany was just a few miles from where Jesus was. Maybe three or four miles. It’s just out of town, out of Jerusalem. They sent word to Jesus, Jesus can you come over to our house in Bethany. Your best friend Lazarus is sick. He’s deathly ill. 

And it takes Jesus three days to go about five miles. What’s going on here? When Jesus finally gets there he could have easily got there in an hour or two. It takes him three days to go a few miles to see his best friend who’s dying. And when he gets there they say, Too late Jesus. He’s already dead. We’ve wrapped him up and we’ve buried him in a tomb. You’re too late. Sorry. 

Jesus wasn’t late. Because Jesus already had in his mind what he was going to do. His goal was not to heal Lazarus. His goal was to raise him from the dead. His goal was not to just make him well. His goal was to do a miracle of astronomical proportions.

Sometimes God lets a situation get so bad only a miracle will do. Don’t give up your faith. Hold on. Hang on. Do the things I’ve just taught you how to do. Because you’re getting ready for a miracle. 

Jesus walks up to the tomb and says roll the stone away. They roll the stone away and he says Lazarus come forth. Now, I’m glad he said Lazarus because if he just said, Come forth, every dead person in the cemetery is going to come out at that point. But he calls him by name: Lazarus come forth. He comes out. 

 

Psalm 56:3 NIV When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

LISTEN: Some of you are waiting for the fear to go away. IT won’t!You must move against it in FAITH!

STORY: BAMBOO!- Don’t get discouraged at year 6!

•Some bamboos grow very, very slow. And some grow very fast. And some grow slow, slow, slow and then fast. Here’s how you grow a typical piece of bamboo. You cut a piece of bamboo off and you cut it in half and you stick it in the ground. And you water it for a year and nothing happens. Nothing. And you water it for the second year, the bamboo, and nothing happens. And you water it for the third year and nothing happens. And you water it for the fourth and then the fifth year and nothing happens. And you fertilize it. And on the sixth year you water it and nothing happens. And on the seventh year it sprouts. But once it sprouts it takes off. Some bamboo can grow one meter or three feet in twenty four hours. Some bamboo can grow to nine feet in about four days. It just when it takes off it takes off.

Galatians 6:9 NIV –  Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

      •“So let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while, at the RIGHT TIME we WILL reap a harvest of blessing IF we don’t get discouraged and give up!”

It’s Always too soon to Quit!

II Timothy 4:7 NIV – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Don’t Give up! Don’t Back Down! Tenacious Unsinkable people don’t quit bc of circumstances, rejections, or problems! They WAIT!

What are you believing God for?​

Faith bridges the impossible with the possible

God exists in the realm of the possible. All things are possible for God.

We live in a finite world. With situations that sometimes look hopeless or impossible.

Faith connects these two realms. Faith makes the impossible possible to change our lives for the better.

Mark 9:23 – 23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.

3 Benefits to Faith

1. Salvation

We are saved through it

Ephesians 2:6-9 (NIV)6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

God has enough grace to cover the sins of the whole world and we can all obtain it through faith. We live at a time where we sin increasing at what seems to be an exponential rate but God just turns up his grace…

Romans 5:20 (NIV) 20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,

Credited Righteousness

Capital One

I am a customer of Capital One. I earn 1.5% cashback on everything I purchase. Yesterday, I just cashed in my Capital One Cash rewards. I got $672 for free which just helped my pay for some tires for my car. We all love it when the bank credits our account.

When we have faith, God credits our account with righteousness.
Our salvation and the whole New Testament doctrine are built on this verse:

Galatians 3:5-6 (NIV)5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

Just like Abraham, God will credit your account with righteousness because you believed. Those who have faith are now known as the sons of Abraham.

The number 1 benefit of faith is Salvation.

2. Relationship

God did not just save us and then leave us as orphans. He wants to have a relationship with us. Adam walked with God in the Garden of Eden but for us, to walk with him in this life, we must walk by Faith.

Walking with Him

Faith brings us into relationship with Him.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV) 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Amos 3:3 (NKJV) 3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

God is always consistent with his Word. If God lives in the realm of the possible and the infinite, then we must believe his word to stay in step with him. Sometimes that can be difficult be we must learn to trust in him over our circumstances.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

God said, leave it to me

There was one a time in my career that I was receiving unfair treatment and persecution. I would bring it before God in prayer and the Holy Spirit kept convicting me to not retaliate but to leave it to him. In my own understanding I kept on thinking of things I could do to clear my name, ways I could retaliate but God kept prompting me to trust him to take care of it and to do nothing. God lifted me out of that situation and “prepared a table for me in the presence of my enemies.”

God wants a relationship with us as a good Father. Not all of us have had a great relationship with our earthly Fathers. Sometimes that is due to struggling to obtain their approval.

Faith counts us approved

Matthew 3:16-17 (NKJV) 16When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He[a] saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

God was pleased with Jesus even before he did any ‘works’.

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV) 6But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

The number 2 benefit of Faith is that it brings us into relationship with the Father.

3. Divine Help

The God of the impossible is willing to intervene in our circumstances.

Healing

James 5:13-15 (NIV) 13Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Two Missionaries

I was once visited at my front door by two missionaries of a particular faith. After they found out that I am a Christian, they asked me certain questions. I was a student at Bible College at the time at very into the Word. The conversation turned to healings. They mentioned that they do not believe in healings, only blessings. I told them that at various times in my life I have seen healings and experienced them myself.

One of them said, “Are you telling me that if I go to your church, that I can be healed?”

“No!” I replied, “Because you don’t believe. But if you did believe, you could very well be healed.”

God can also give us wisdom to handle any of our trials.

Wisdom

James 1:5-6 (NIV)5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

God gives you a wisdom that helps you build your life and the life of those around you.

Miracles

Extraordinary Faith draws the miraculous into your life. Do you need a miracle?

Matthew 8:5-13 (NIV)5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith…
…13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.

What is Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV)11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is called a substance. It’s a spiritual stuff that begins to reside on the inside of you. All of a sudden you know that you have that thing you are hoping for before you see it. It’s the evidence of what you cannot see.

What Faith is not

Faith is not a denial of reality nor is it just a positive mental attitude.

Name it and claim it

Thank God for the Word of Faith movement. God revealed to some great some great, faith-filled men some essential truths about Faith. Faith speaks!

2 Corinthians 4:13 (NIV)13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[a] Since we have that same spirit of[b] faith, we also believe and therefore speak,

Some however started to believe that they could not admit that their situation was bad.

It is okay to face the facts about your current situation. Just remember – with God all things are possible. Take Abraham for example…

Romans 4:19-22 (NIV)19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”

Faith is not just optimism of a ‘positive mental attitude. Faith must be in God and in his Son Jesus Christ.

How do we obtain Faith?

So how do we get this faith?

By Hearing the Word

Romans 10:14-17 (NIV)14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

If you want to be built-up in your faith; hear the word and read the word. This will give you hope that in God, your situation could change for the better.

Beginning to hope again…

When we hear the word, it lifts our hearts. We begin to hope again. Faith comes from hope.

Colossians 1:3-5 (NIV)3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel

We ask in our hearts, “Could God do this for me? Is God willing?”

I AM Willing

A man with leprosy began to hope in Jesus.

Matthew 8 (NIV)12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b] When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

When we believe, God gives us each a measure of faith.

Gods gives us each a measure

Romans 12:3 (NIV)3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

Like any muscle, we can grow in our faith when we exercise it. But it will be tested!

The Testing of your Faith

James 1:2-4 (NIV)2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

The purpose of the test is that you will overcome through perseverance. Faith requires grit! You must be steadfast to believe in God’s word above your circumstance. So how do we overcome?

How to Overcome

God has given us armor to help us overcome. The moment you step out in faith you will likely get attacked! That’s why we are given the shield of faith.

Ephesians 6:12-16 (NIV)12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

In this verse I want to call attention to two particular weapons; a defensive weapon and an offensive weapon.

1. The Shield of Faith

“…take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

It can extinguish all of the fiery arrows of the evil one. Your faith can protect you from ALL of the enemy’s attacks. You will be attacked but you are not ill-equipped.

Stronger than Vibranium

This shield is more effective than that of Captain America. It is stronger than Vibranium Steel Alloy! It defends us from this seen and unseen. Not Satan, nor Hawkeye, nor the Green Arrow can overcome the Shield of Faith.

2. Sword of the Spirit

2 Corinthians 4:13 (NIV)13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken. “Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak,

Notice how Jesus overcame Satan in the wilderness:

Matthew 4:3-4 (NIV)3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Speak the Word of God in Faith and your will overcome. Confess the truth out loud and you will overcome and pass the test of Faith just as Jesus did.

Introduction: Beware Of Terrorist Groups In Church

Latest news reports are that five terrorist cell groups have been operating in many of our churches.

They have been identified as: Bin Sleepin, Bin Arguin, Bin Fightin, Bin Complainin, and Bin Missin. Their leader, Lucifer Bin Workin, trained these groups to destroy the Body of Christ.The plan is to come into the church disguised as Christians. and to work within the church to discourage, disrupt, and destroy.

However, there have been reports of a sixth group. A tiny cell known by the name Bin Prayin, is actually the only effective counter terrorism force in the church. Unlike other terrorist cells, the Bin Prayin team does not blend in with whoever and whatever comes along. Bin Prayin does whatever is needed to uplift and encourage the Body of Christ.

We have noticed that the Bin Prayin cell groups has different characteristics than the others. They have Bin Watchin, Bin Waitin, Bin Fastin, and Bin Longin for their Master, Jesus Christ to return.

NO church is exempt, however, you can spot them if you bin lookin and bin goin!!

This decision and opportunity of Spiritual formation and maturity happens over a lifetime, not overnight – We grow like oak trees, not dandelions.

What does it mean to be a Christian?

  1. Jesus explained what it meant to be a Christian in Matthew 16:24 (NLT). He said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.” 
    1. Put aside your selfish ambition – The desires we naturally have are in opposition to that which God desires (Gal. 5:16-17). But the Holy Spirit makes us a new person (2 Cor. 5:17) and gives us new desires (Rom. 8:9).
    2. Shoulder (Carry) your cross – The cross as a vivid pic that the disciples fully understood. To take up your cross meant to face death spiritually & possibly physically. Our sinful way of life dies (Rom. 6:6, Gal. 5:24) and Christ’s new life lives in us (Gal. 2:20). And for some, following Christ would cost them their lives physically.
      1. To sacrifice is to give up something for the sake of something else that is much better.
      2. What is my cross? The place of our greatest pain
    3. Follow me – To be a Christian, we must follow Christ. We must act the way he acted. We must speak the way he spoke. We must love the way he loved. He is the Ultimate example of life.
      1. Jesus came not just to teach us how to be “spiritual” but how to live as a human (purpose of the incarnation)
      2. Embrace God’s will no matter what the cost

2 Reasons People Don’t Become Christians

1. The’ve never met one    2. They have met one

I love Jesus, but sometimes “Christians” frustrate me. Why? They fight & argue about the dumbest things. Too judgmental, act holier than thou, incredibly condescending.

Ghandi said, “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” 

Dear Christian: Don’t load Bible verses like bullets in your gun to fire at your theological opponents. Scripture is too sacred for that!

How Should We Live?

Matt. 11:29 MSG – “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

1. Live With Humility 

Humility – Modest opinion of one’s own importance or rank. To lower oneself; lowly; abasing yourself, “down to earth”.

Humility – The discipline of putting others ahead of self -the choice to value others above self – its a matter of faith

Matt. 5:3 NLT “God blesses those who realize their need for him…”

It recognizes how inadequate we are by ourselves.

James 4:10 NIV “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up”. 

People who are not humble think they know everything, no one can correct them, and they believe they have the answers to everything

Proverbs 16:18 ESV – Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

2. Live With Simplicity 

Freedom from complexity. We live mismanaged lifestyles

Luke 12:15 NIV “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

•We have become slaves to our belongings – St Francis of Assisi insisted that true freedom lies in the abundance of life, not the abundance of possessions. Many times those possessions that we have acquired exercise power over us.

Matt. 16:26 NLT “How do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul?”

Living simply means that we carefully examine what it means to fully live. How? By focusing our efforts on things that are true, beautiful, and essential. Like Faith, Family, Healthy, Friends, and our Church, our Community

Psalms 131:1-2 MSG – God, I’m not trying to rule the roost, I don’t want to be king of the mountain. I haven’t meddled where I have no business or fantasized grandiose plans. 2 I’ve kept my feet on the ground, I’ve cultivated a quiet heart. Like a baby content in its mother’s arms, my soul is a baby content.

•’I think the devil has made it his business to monopolize on 3 elements: noise, hurry, crowds… Satan is quite aware of the power of silence.”

3. Live With Faith

Potentiality for favorable or interesting results.

Faith is… To have trust or assurance, confidence, conviction, belief, reliance in what God says. Trust that produces actions.

Mark 9:23 NIV “Everything is possible for him who believes.”

•Believing when I donʼt see it.

certain of what we do not see.” 

•Obeying when I donʼt understand it.

his family from the flood.  He obeyed God, who warned him about 

something that had never happened before.” 

•Persisting when I donʼt feel like it.

4. Live With Love

C.S. Lewis said, “If you love deeply, you’re going to get hurt badly. But it’s still worth it.”

I Cor. 13:1 NIV – “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge…but have not love, I am nothing.”

•The more spiritual you become, the more love you will show to others.

Matt 5:44 MSG “I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer.”

Luke. 6:37 NIV”Do not judge, and you’ll not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”

When grace is pierced, it bleeds pardon. When grace is crucified, it doesn’t condemn.

•Love takes no account of the evil done to it. Love does not filter its current emotional state through the screen of past hurts and offenses. Instead, it shows the grace and forgiveness of the Lord Jesus Christ who loved us while we were yet sinners, even suffering the shame of the cross

What really happens when we are critical towards people: “Criticism is the disapproval of people, not for having faults, but having faults different from your own.”

Love is ever ready to believe the best of every person. Natural human love requires a person to prove themselves before love is given. However, Christ-like love offers itself to those who are both lovable and unlovable. Instead of assuming the worst, it tirelessly looks for the best in others. True love hopes all things and lives with an expectant faith towards others.

In Jesus parable, the rich man ends up in hell, not bc he failed to believe the right things, but bc he failed to love Lazarus. @BrianZahnd

Priorities – A priority is anything to which we give first place, in order of importance. It is that which is most productive and beneficial to us. The things that matter most.

Why People don’t make Prayer a Priority

  1. Not sure you know how to pray
  2. Get bored or distracted while trying to pray
  3. Think your requests are too small for God
  4. Not sure your prayers will make a difference

Luke 18:1 NIV  Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

“Ought” – means we are under obligation, we are bound, and it is necessary for us to pray always.

NOT bc its the religious thing to do, NOT to please God, NOT to be saved and go to Heaven – It’s bc we have no other choice

CS Lewis said, “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time – waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God – It changes me”

What is Prayer?

  2. Communion (relationship)
  3. Channel for divine power (supernatural)

What it accomplishes:

  1. Draws you closer to God
  2. It brings answers, it creates (John 14:14, Hebrews 11:1-3)
  3. Brings blessings to others (I Tim. 2:1)
  4. Reveals (Jeremiah 33:3)

Our most sincere prayer should be: “Lord Teach us to Pray…” Luke 11:1 NIV

2. I Can Discover My Friendship with God

Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”

One of life’s greatest privilege is the right to use the name of Jesus in Prayer

Because we have Friendship with God, God promises:

1. To hear us (Jer. 33:3 / Isa. 65:24)

2. To Help us (Mt.7:7-8 / Mark 11:24)

3. If there is a need, God will meet it (Phil. 4:19)

4. If there is a burden, God will lift it (I Peter 5:7)

5. If there is a sin, God will forgive it (I John 1:9)

Romans 5:10-11 NLT For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

3. I Can Deliver My Anxieties to God

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.

Remember: God has free unlimited anytime minutes

We have 2 options – We can Panic or Pray -You decide

I Peter 5:7 NIV “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Anxiety – state of uneasiness, apprehension about future uncertainties

Worry – Strangle or choke, suffocating, feeling we experience in time of fear.

-Some people’s calling in life – they want to always examine what can go wrong

-Martin Luther said, “Pray and let God worry”

We are not designed to carry stress, anxiety, or worry

Remember this  – The shadow of a dog never bit anyone

Matthew 7:9-11 NIV “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

4. I Can Defer My Life to the Will of God

I John 5:14-15 NIV “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

John 14:13-14 NIV “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Praying in Jesus Name is not a magical formula statement at the end of your prayer. No prayers recorded in scripture with that statement at the end.

It’s prayer made on His authorization.

When we pray we give God legal invitation to bring His will to pass. His will is always accomplished through obedience in prayer.

Anytime God wants something done, He calls someone to pray!

Everybody wants to know about the end of the world. Some people love to make predictions about when it will happen, some people love to interpret current news and speculate how it will happen, and everyone loves to make money selling their terrifying visions to anyone willing to buy them..

The end is coming. Are we ready for the day when it all comes crashing down and nothing is left but the countdown to the end of the world? In this series we will talk about ways that we can get ready for the end and start living for the beginning of the rest of our lives.

“The Book of Eli,” “The Darkest Hour,” “Contagion,” “The Day After Tomorrow, “San Andreas”. The list of doomsday movies that Hollywood produces is incredible. Yet, they keep coming. There’s something about these end of the world stories that fascinates us, frightens us and keeps us coming back for more. The theme that inspires is survival. Against all odds, when all hope is lost, humanity grabs hold of courage, defies the enemy and turns the tide.How will you survive the end of the world?

(Matthew 24:1-6 NIV) “Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.”

1. Don’t Be Alarmed, Don’t Be Troubled

Jesus wants us to be calm, quiet spirited, not worried, and not to be deceived.

(2 Peter 3:3-10 NIV) First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ʻcomingʼ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.”

Writing this letter near the end of his life, Peter wanted to remind Christians that the final day is real. He calls it “the day of the Lord” and reminds his Christian readers that it is unquestionably coming.

To scoff means to speak in a scornful or mocking way. What do scoffers think about the end? In verse 4, Peter says that the false teachers mock the promise of Christ’s return and a final judgment. “Where is it?” they ask. “Ever since the days of the ancient patriarchs the world has gone on without interruption.” The scoffers claim that God has not and will not intervene in world history.

How do we know?

√ People will do their own thing. 

(Me focused, materialistic, Selfie Centered)

(Matthew 24:37-39 NIV) “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.”

√ People will forget God.

(Matthew 24:12 NIV) “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.”

Many will turn away from the Faith, against the Faith, Twist the Faith, & Tune out the Faith. Have Misplaced Priorities.

√ People will think Heʼs not coming.

(1 Thessalonians 5:2 NIV) “For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”

√ People will not be ready.

(Matthew 24:40-42 NIV) “Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”

If the end is near…

1.I should pray.

(1 Peter 4:7 NIV) “The end of all things is near, therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.”

Anytime God wanted something done on the earth he calls someone to pray!

Luke 21:36 NIV –  Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

Real prayer is driven by relationship not need or crisis.

U can dump your junk. God gets bigger, your junk gets smaller.

Causes u to b more focused minded

a. Make it personal not formal.

(Matthew 6:7-8 NIV) And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

b. Pray with confidence.

(Hebrews 4:15-16 NIV) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are —yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

(James 5:16 NLT) “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

2.I should focus on my relationships.

(1 Peter 4:8-9 NIV) “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

Relationships are far more important than issues or disagreements. Get over those quickly.

a. What relationship needs to be initiated

(Luke 6:13 NIV) “When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them…” 

  b.  What relationship needs to be nurtured

(Galatians 5:13-15 NIV) “Serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.” 

c. What relationship needs to be restored

(Ephesians 4:3 NIV) “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” 

Colossians 3:13 NIV – Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

3. I should get my life right with God.

(2 Peter 3:11 NIV) “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly

lives.”

(Matthew 24:42 NIV) Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 

(Romans 10:9-10 NIV) “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

4.Share Christ with urgency

(Luke 12:16-21 NCV) “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

Conclusion

Just as there was a beginning, there will be an end. We will not be reincarnated. We live once, we will die once and then we will stand before God. For unbelievers, today is the day to believe in him and turn from sin. For believers, today is the day to live lives of godliness and holiness so that we are ready for that final day.

When the End looks Troubling – Look Up! Look to Christ!

When we draw a circle in the sand, we become the welcoming Church God called us to be. We must move from cliques to a community

Sacred text asserts that human beings were created to live in community, not as fragmented tribes, nations and separated peoples. Jesus opened the door for us to be inclusive of everyone. On some level, all are to be welcomed into our lives—saint or sinner. But what does this inclusiveness look like, what are its boundaries, and what does it result in?

Jesus was an includer of all kinds of people

John  8:2-11 NIV  At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”11 “No one, sir,” she said.“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Two issues in this story

1. Sin – Right and Wrong (The Law)

Where was the man?

Bias – Demeaning towards women

Jesus said – DO NOT JUDGE

A bias is a factor in human judgement  – some judge women and give a pass to the man. Judge other kids and not our own.

Luke 6:41-42 NLT – And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye[a] when you have a log in your own? 42 How can you think of saying, ‘Friend,[b] let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

•God did not call us to be the judge, jury, or prosecuting or defense attorney, we are called to be a Witness! That simple. Let your light shine!

2. How we treat other people that we think are different than us

•Her Issues and sin are no different than any of ours

Romans 3:23 NCV – “Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standard.” 

No adultery? Jesus said, if you lust after someone, you’ve done it in your heart. ??????

•Jesus pursues the imperfect

Luke 5:31-32 NLT – Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. 32 I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”

Luke 15 – lost coin, lost sheep, prodigal son

This is what Jesus made the story about  – he did other stories

Zacchaeus, Samaritan woman, lawmakers, law breakers, rich and poor

•Jesus was drawing a circle while others were drawing lines – Circle drawing is so much better than line drawing. Jesus put them all in the circle and then got in there with them.

Church at large loves to react to things around us in the world. We are adversarial

NewsReport – The world will never think like the church – the church will always see things different. We are Christ followers.

Talking about what we are for, makes us more effective in reaching people more than what we are against! 

How to be Radically Inclusive

1. We validate people by including people

Ephesians 2:19-21 MSG  – That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home.

Paul was saying, You belong here

•You can approve of people even if you don’t approve what they do

Separate the behavior from the individual 

•When it comes to God’s family who included you? who are you including?

Let’s show the world that The Family of God is not a bunch of arrogant self righteous people! They are loving, kind, and gracious

2. We should include people immediately

Jesus included her immediately. no hoops, no proving time

John 10:10 NIV – “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”

Dream Big Pt.3 – Dreaming is Praying

(Ephesians 3:20 Message)  “God can do anything—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!”

•We have been programmed to live within the limitations that other people have set for us. I want to elevate our perception of what is possible for us.

•God gives us the ability to dream and imagine in order to move us into the purpose He has for our lives.

•A dream is a “faith picture”; seeing something with your mind’s eye that you hope to one day see with natural eye.

A few years I read a little book by Catherine Marshall titled  Adventures in Prayer and I’ll never forget one thing she wrote. She said, “Dreaming is praying.” I think she’s right. In my experience, the more I pray the more dream. Start with prayer!

Dreaming is a form of praying and praying is a form of dreaming. And as Catherine Marshall says, “There is no limit to what this combination of dreams and prayer can achieve.”

Luke 18:1 NIV  Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up

“Ought” – means we are under obligation, we are bound, and it is necessary for us to pray always.

1. All Dreams need to be designed in the context of prayer

•Prayer is the highest order of business. For it links a powerless human to the creative force of God’s sovereign power!

“When we work, we work; but when we pray, God works.”- Max Lucado

Ephesians 1:17-23 NIV I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

You need a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention because it will force you to get on your knees and seek God. Big dreams are the best thing for us spiritually. They make us pray. They make us seek God. They force us to live the way we ought to live—in complete dependence on God.

Prayer is the activating force that puts authority and the power of God to work in your life and make your dreams come true

Ephesians 3:20 NIV – Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

I was challenged and convicted a few years ago by something David Yonggi Cho said: “God doesn’t answer vague prayers.” Let me explain why. I think vague prayers are cop-outs. God doesn’t answer vague prayers because they don’t require any faith and God doesn’t get the glory. Sometimes we pray in such vague terms that there is no way God can or cannot answer our prayers. I think we’re vague because we don’t want to hold ourselves accountable. Or we’re afraid.

2. A Big God = Big Prayers and Big Dreams

God asks Moses a question. It’s more than a question. It’s the question. Your answer to this question, the question, will determine the size of your prayers and dreams.

Numbers 11:23 NLT –  Then the Lord said to Moses, “Has my arm lost its power? (Is there any limit to my power?) Now you will see whether or not my word (dream) comes true!”

The obvious answer to that question is no. God is omnipotent, which means by definition, there is nothing God cannot do. Yet many of us pray as if our problems are bigger than God. So let me remind you of this high-octane truth that should fuel your faith: God is infinitely bigger than your biggest problem or biggest dream. And while we’re on the topic, His grace is infinitely bigger than your biggest sin

The modern mystic, A. W. Tozer, believed that a low view of God is the cause of a hundred lesser evils, but a high view of God is the solution to ten thousand temporal problems. If that’s true, and I believe it is, then your biggest problem isn’t an impending divorce or failing business or doctor’s diagnosis. Please understand: I’m not making light of your relational or financial or health issues. I certainly don’t want to minimize the overwhelming challenges you might be facing. But in order to regain a godly perspective on your problems, you have to answer this question: are your problems bigger than God or is God bigger than your problems? Our biggest problem is our small view of God. That is the cause of all lesser evils. And it’s a high view of God that is the solution to all other problems.

Is there any limit to God’s power? 

Ephesians 3:20 NIV – Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

•(amplified version-  “Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]”

Have you answered the question? There are only two options: yes or no. Until you come to the conviction that God’s grace and power knows no limits, you will pray small prayers and dream small dreams.

We serve a BIG God!

Isaiah 40:12 NIV – Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?

Once you embrace the omnipotence of God – you will pray big prayers and dream big dreams!

Isaiah 44:24 NIV – This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, who formed 

you in the womb:I am the Lord, the Maker of all things,who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself,

Isaiah 45:12 NIV – It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it.
My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.

The size of prayers depends on the size of our God. And if God knows no limits, then neither should our prayers. God exists outside of the four space-time dimensions He created. We should pray that way! We should dream that way!

•••It reminds me of the man who was sizing up God by asking, “God, how long is a million years to you?” God said, “A million years is like a second.” Then the man asked, “How much is a million dollars to you?” God said, “A million dollars is like a penny.” The man smiled and said, “Could you spare a penny?” God smiled back and said, “Sure, just wait a second.”

3. The Secret to Big Prayers and Big Dreams

It’s not difficult. It’s quite elementary. It’s crucial to change the way that we pray in order to obtain positive results.

Jesus taught a fundamental formula of Praying that gets results. Answers to our Prayers can be a reality. 

The PRAYER of FAITH – It’s you asking God for a particular outcome, whether its a job, money, a person, healing, family, etc…whatever.

Mark 11:22-24 ESV22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever SAYS to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received[a] it, and it will be yours.

A. Ask God

Matthew 7:7-8 ESV “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be open.

God Makes Outrageous Promises About What He Does WHEN WE PRAY

John 14:12-14 ESV 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me[a] anything in my name, I will do it.

John 15:7 ESV – If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Anything: any thing whatever; something, no matter what: a thing of any kind. in any degree; to any extent; in any way; at all:

•If you want to see Great Results in prayer and our dreams then be specific when you ask God for what you want, need, or desire.

If you are not clear, Faith cannot bring you what you want, need, or desire. a mixed frequency with your asking may produce no results. Get SPECIFIC with God and ASK Him

I John 5:14-15 ESV 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

•“Whatever & Anything” is an Amazing promise. What is your Anything?

We have some WHATEVER and ANYTHING Dreams and Prayers for God to do! 

B.  Believe That You Receive

Mark 11:24 ESV – Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received[a] it, and it will be yours.

•You must know what you want is yours the moment you ask!

•The Rule here is “Ask in Prayer” (When you pray) – not after you pray, not when you feel something, not when you see something. The moment you pray believe you receive! NOW! This is very difficult for many people. Why? Because they struggle with their belief.

“I can get more out of God by believing Him for one minute than I can by shouting at Him all night.”- Smith Wigglesworth

The Law of Belief states, “What  person believes in their heart with conviction becomes their reality.

•We manifest what we believe. You may or may not be aware of what you truly believe, but basically that is what “issues” are coming to pass in your life.

How do I create a belief system that causes me to receive the answers to my prayers?

Mark 9:23 ESV – And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”

Don’t Give Up, Don’t Get Frustrated, disappointed, or lose hope – Praying is what we do in our time, and the answer manifests in God’s time! 

Psalms 37:4 -5 NIV – ”Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.”

-The desires placed within us can be an indication of God’s will for our lives

When We Pray and Dream our promise is the following 4 things:

  1. Nothing shall be impossible to you
  2. Ask what you will, and it will be done
  3. Ask anything in Jesus’ name, and He will do it!
  4. Whatsoever things you desire when you pray, You will have them!

One dream, one prayer can change ANYTHING. one dream, one prayer can change EVERYTHING
