The Unshakables Pt.2

The Unshakables Part 2

(Luke 6:46-49 MSG) “Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on. “If you work the words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who dug deep and laid the foundation of his house on bedrock. When the river burst its banks and crashed against the house, nothing could shake it; it was built to last. But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a dumb carpenter who built a house but skipped the foundation. When the swollen river came crashing in, it collapsed like a house of cards. It was a total loss.”

Joseph’s story takes up half of the book of Genesis  – 11th born son of Jacob who is the grandson of Abraham – Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Joseph

Joseph had a dream – God spoke to him & life went in another direction – His world got shaken up

Message dedicated to those who feel your life isn’t going how God planned it Or how you planned it – Wrong direction – Ready to check out

Joseph – Went from privileged son – to the pit of slavery – to the palace of Egypt

For when life gets shaken and isn’t turning out the way you had planned… “Don’t give up on your dreams.”

Been a handful of times I’ve wanted to quit

At seventeen years old – Joseph called the family together to share something

(Genesis 37:5-7, 19-20)  Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.  He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”  “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other.  “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

When Things Are Shaky, Don’t Give Up on Your Dream…

  1. Even if you didn’t start off well.

Many define their potential off of what they see in the rear view mirror

The accuser of the brethren Satan always reminding us of yesterday

Paul had a horrible resume – Giving the order to kill Christians – You’re persecuting me God says  – Bible is full of people with HORRIBLE resumes

Regardless of your yesterdays God can still use you

We Dream of a church that believes in people. We dream of a church where we allow people to change their history

(1 Timothy 1:12-13 NIV “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.  Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.”

God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.

Don’t give up…

  1. Even if those closest don’t support it.

Even if your family, friends don’t understand – Joseph’s family didn’t understand

Even Jesus wasn’t accepted in his own hometown

“Isn’t that Mary and Joseph’s boy?” – He did no miracles in that town

(Mark 6:3-4 NIV) “Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.”

Joseph like Jesus faced massive rejection

So…Don’t give up on your dream…

  1. Even if your journey is full of surprises.

When you get a dream from God it never goes to A-B in a straight line

Zigs – Zags – Up and Down

Sure he was thinking – this isn’t what the dream looked like – Dreams have critical intersections – faced with a dilemma

Give up – or go on – based on how Joseph felt…Misunderstood by his family – give up? Sold into slavery by his brothers – give up? Living in a strange country far from home – give up? Given favor in Potiphar’s house (Egyptian slave owner) – go on! Falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife – give up? Thrown into prison – give up? Put in charge of all the prisoners – go on! Forgotten by the chief cupbearer – give up? Remained in prison two years – give up? Interpreted Pharoh’s dream – go on! Became second in command – go on!

The truth is your life will look the same way

Joseph had twice as many give ups as go on’s

What will you do in the give up moment? Don’t Quit

What do you do – How do you make it? – Joseph had the assurance that the Lord was with me

(Romans 8:28 NIV)  “And we know that in all things (good or bad) God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Don’t give up on your dream…

  1. Even if it takes a long time to realize it.

Clearly, Joseph rose to the top, but it took a while to happen

Joseph was 17 years old when he was sold into slavery (Genesis 37:2).

He was 30 when Pharaoh promoted him (Genesis 41:46)

He had been in prison for two years before that (Genesis 41:1)

So he was in Potiphar’s house for 11 years.

It took 11 years for the full measure of God’s blessing to be accomplished in Joseph’s life.

(Habakkuk 2:3 LB)  “These things I plan won’t happen right away.  Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled.  If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass.  Just be patient!  They will not be overdue a single day!”

Why is this? God is way more interested in your character then your comfort

(Jeremiah 17:10 LB) “The Lord searches our hearts and examines our deepest motives so he can give to each person his right reward, according to how he has lived.”

Joseph’s Words of Encouragement

  • “Focus on what happens in you not to you.”

This spiritual principle could save your life & save you mileage

God is working character inside of us & what we are going through is the thing he is using to facilitate that

You have a role in how fast it goes depending on how fast you learn

We tend to focus more on what’s happening to us not in us

“God make this go away” Wrong prayer

“God what do you want me to learn through this?” Right prayer

(1st Peter 1:6-7 NLT) So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while. These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold — and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

You cannot control what happens around you, but you can control what happens in you.

  • “Your response to offense determines your future.”

Joseph has a chance to get his brothers back

Family coming for food – Joseph knows but family doesn’t know him

Some people live their whole life this way – It’s not worth it

Joseph’s brothers say, don’t kill us…Look at Joseph’s response

(Genesis 50:20-21)  “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…”

Some of you need to walk out forgiveness in your life – That resentment is destroying you & you know it

(Job 21:23-25 NLT)  One person dies in prosperity, completely comfortable and secure,24 the picture of good health, vigorous and fit. 25 Another person dies in bitter poverty, never having tasted the good life.

Will you leave your pain in the past to follow your dreams, or will you let these hurts steal your hope for a better life?

  • “Every dream has tough times but remember God is always with you.”

He is there – He is with you – May not feel it but he is there

When you’re down to nothing – God is up to something

(Isaiah 43:3 ESV) When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

(Matthew 28:20 NIV) And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Salvation Call – Prayer

Jesus, forgive me for all of my sins, I give my life to you, make me brand new. I believe you died for me so that I can live. Fill me with your spirit that I would know you, & serve you with my life. My life is not my own, I give it to you. Thank you for loving me, in Jesus name, Amen!

Guest Speaker Notes: 2nd Place

2nd Place – Todd Hearnsberger

If you’re a parent, you’ve probably had your kids in some kind of sports program… – We want our kids to be the best in whatever sport they’re in
– We want them to bring home the top ribbon…1st place…BLUE

Joseph (Gen. 37)
– God was positioning this man to be 2nd place
– God would put him in a 13 year training program

Leonard Ravenhill – “We have this whole thing turned around. Jesus trained for 30 years and preached for 3 years. Today, we train for 3 years and preach for 30 years.”

– We must understand that God’s training time is on His calendar and not ours.

R.T. Kendall – “God’s chosen vessels wait a long time before God uses them. There’s a long tradition that those who are used the most wait the longest.”

We all know that we can easily get frustrated with God’s training program and His timing because His training program gets to the core of who we are and identifies the junk.

– Ravi Zacharias: “God does it His way. He trained Moses in a palace to use him in a dessert and He training Joseph in a dessert to use him in a palace.”

Here was God’s plan to prepare Joseph for 2nd place:

1. Betrayal
2. False Accusations 3. Broken Promises

Medical Doctors say: “The longer the disease goes untreated, the more radical the treatment needs to be to bring it to wholeness.”

– When God has to do a deep work within you, He has to bring out the most radical instruments to perform His work.

Joseph’s Plan:
1. You will be BETRAYED by people closest to you.

a. TEST: Can you be BETRAYED and not let bitterness penetrate your heart?

  1. You will be FALSELY ACCUSED of something and not be able to defend yourself.
    1. We are always ready to open our mouth and prove that we’re right.
    2. TEST: Can you be accused and not defend yourself, but let God be your defender?
  2. You will have BROKEN PROMISES by others and they may forget to follow through.

a. TEST: Can you trust God as your source rather than trusting their promise as your source?

C.S. Lewis: “God never promised that you would be without pain…but you can be without stain.”

Pastoral Statistics:

  • –  1,500 pastors quit the ministry each month (50 per day)
  • –  In the first 10 years of ministry, 50% of pastors leave the ministry
  • –  Over a lifetime of ministry, 90% will never retire as pastors
  • –  Facebook quote: “Sometimes I wonder if the devil has left the American church alone. We are so busy fighting one another and destroying each other that he doesn’t really need to bother us much.”

Closer look at the process that Joseph had to go through to get to 2nd place:

    1. You’re going to be BETRAYED by the closest people

  • –  Those closest to you will not only throw you under a bus, but in Joseph’s case, they threw him in a pit.
  • –  When people are hurting you, they are preparing you!

o The actions that people are taking against you is preparing you for that which God is wanting to do deep inside of you.

o Hurt is proportionate to intimacy. The closer you are the more it hurts and the less they have to do to hurt you.

o When Joseph’s own brothers threw him into a pit and sold him into slavery, it was all part of the plan of God to see if Joseph can be betrayed by the closest people in his life and not become a skeptic.

  • –  The test is: Can you get hurt by others and put the situation in God’s hands and not become a cynic?
  • –  Here’s the reality: If you’re heart is beating, you’re going to be betrayed at one point or another.

    2. You will be FALSELY ACCUSED of something that you didn’t even do and you won’t be able to defend yourself.

  • –  Augustin (4th century preacher): “Lord, deliver me from the lust of always needing to vindicate myself and always needing to tell my side of the story.”
  • –  Here’s a reality: There will be some seasons that God will not allow you to tell your side of the story. And when that happens, you’re going to have to trust God to vindicate you.

o Some of you are living with a stigma of an accusation that you didn’t do.

  • –  Joseph could have vindicated himself when he rose to power, but he chose not to do it.

o Joseph took the position to let the Lord vindicate him. When we take this path, we are becoming more like Jesus.

§ You never see God in His word ever immediately vindicating Himself. God will let the entire planet slander Him and heap accusations upon Him. There will come a day when He will vindicate Himself!

o Genesis 30:33 – “And my [Jacob] honesty will testify for me in the future…” 3. Someone PROMISES you something and then forgets about it.

– It was in this season that Joseph looked like the least candidate for such a high position, but it was in this condition that Joseph was closest to his dream.

o Even though Joseph was in prison, he was still using his gifts.

o You don’t need a position, you don’t need a title, you don’t need a blog, you don’t even need a business card. If God has given you a gift, it can be used anytime, anywhere for the glory of God!

o In ONE DAY, Joseph steps out of his orange jumpsuit and they put a robe on him and his dream was finally fulfilled.

o If Joseph wouldn’t have interpreted the dreams of the baker and cupbearer, they would have never known he had the “gift”…which means that if Joseph copped an attitude because of where he was and because he wasn’t living out the dream that God showed him, he would have never gotten out with that attitude.

o When you feel the furthest, you’re probably the closest!

– Story – British Scientist, Alfred Russell Wallace, was studying the Emperor Moth. This species of moth has an 8” wing span and its coloring is spectacular. One day the moth was going through the metamorphosis process, but the moth was stuck in its cocoon. Through a tiny pinhole, he watched as the moth was struggling to get free through this teeny hole. The scientist concluded that the moth wasn’t going to make it. So he had a bright idea and he took a small cutting instrument and he cut the hole a little bit larger, thereby allowing the moth to get out easier. With ease it popped out. When it popped out of its cocoon, it lost its color and it was unable to fly. Why did this happen? Because there was mucous all over the wings. He then determined that when he cut the hole larger that he took away the moth’s struggle and he took away its flight. And in moments the moth died and it never became what it was meant to be. His conclusion was that the struggle was causing the mucous to come off its wings so that when the moth gets out of that cocoon it would be mucous-free.

o With all the struggles, the fighting, the sleepless nights, the phone calls that you didn’t want to get, the emails that you didn’t want to read, the stuff you had to put up with at work…all of those struggles were there to make you mucous-free!

o If you force the hole to be opened up, then you abort the plan of God and His design and you try to short cut the plan that God wanted you to go through…then you can’t become what God called you to be!

– When God puts you through BETRAYAL, FALSE ACCUSATIONS, and BROKEN PROMISES, God is saying that He’s getting junk off of you that has to come off before you’re going to be what He’s always designed you to be!

1 Peter 4:12-13 – Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.
