The Unshakables Part 4 – Building a Right Foundation

The Unshakables Part 4 – Building a Right Foundation

What happens when my world is shaken up – Do I run to God or run from God? That really is determined by your foundation in Christ – You can build a life that is anchored, immovable, and indestructible.

All of us will experience a giant shake-up at some point. We will be striving towards accomplishing plan A when plan Q gets thrown into our path. Life changes all around us and some of these changes shatter our world. This can be a death, a sudden illness, an accident, a job loss, bankruptcy, a natural disaster, or any number of things that we never dreamed of preparing for.

•Earthquake this past week in Mexico City 7.5

•3rd game of the 1989 World Series in San Francisco 2.9

•in 1995, Kobe Japan, 33,000 people injured, 5,470 killed, 300,000 homeless, destroyed 144,000 buildings. What was the cause? The ground shook for only 20 seconds.

•Scientist and engineers are working on techniques for building earthquake resistant buildings. Their Goal – structures must have strength, flexibility, and proper foundation to withstand the shaking.

(Luke 6:46-49 NIV)46 Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

The determining factor of a right foundation – Determines the stability of your life during shifting; Determines the strength of your life when under storms; Determines the structure of your life (How high determines how deep)

It is to your advantage to become settled and fixed on the Word of God so that the shaking comes it will not shake you.

Our Right Foundation

We believe the Bible is the unchangeable, inspired Word of God to all people. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living.

500 Year of the Reformation  – The Reformers did not see themselves as inventors, discoverers, or creators. Instead they saw their efforts as Rediscovery. •The looked back to the Bible for the mold by which they could shape the church and reform it.

•There was a reformation of church life, practice, and doctrine

• One of the 5 Solas of the Reformation were – Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone): The Bible is the final authority in all matters of life and Godliness. (

In America, Bibles are everywhere. You can find them in grocery stores, bookstores, motel rooms, everywhere. They’re available in all sizes, shapes, translations, versions, leather bound, paperback. Every year the Bible out sells every other major bestseller. Last year there were 500 million Bibles published in the world in 18,000 different languages. In America we are glutted with the word of God on the airways, radio, TV, books, magazines. It’s everywhere. Yet millions of people still miss the blessing of the Bible.

The Bible is not just a book; it is a God breathed, God indwelt, God inspired message. We are to believe what the Bible says, not what we think it says of what someone else says that it says.

The Bible is God’s Word to man, written and preserved for eternity. It is God’s official declaration and final decision. When invoked, it sets the standard to which all circumstances must conform. it is the absolute truth and the foundation of our Christian Faith.

The Scriptures contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation! Read it to be wise, we believe it to be saved, and practice it to be holy. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of Glory, and a river of pleasure. It is the book of all books!

1. The Scriptures are Supernaturally Inspired By God

2 Timothy 3:16-17 AMP – Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action),17 So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.

“The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold of me.” Martin Luther

“If we take the supernatural out of Christianity all we are is a philosophy”

2 Peter 1:20-21 ESV knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Charles Spurgeon said – “The Book is a divine production; it is perfect, and it is the last court of appeal, the judge which ends all strife. I would as soon dream of blaspheming my Maker as of questioning the infallibility of His Word.”

•••Scripture is of no private interpretation. God has an intended meaning for each passage. There is only one correct interpretation. God did not gives the Bible so that we could find in it what we want it to mean. God gave us the Bible so that we could study it diligently to find out what it actually means. Many applications but only one interpretation.

The Bible Is An Eastern Book

•It was not written for theologians.

•It was never intended to be exhaustive, only comprehensive.

•It was written with a supernatural frame of reference.

•It’s the oldest book in the world—whose Author is still alive.

•It can best be understood from the standpoint of experience.

•It is a “living” document. It’s Author hovers over the pages.

•The Holy Spirit will never lead you to do anything contrary to what He has already written.

Interesting Insights Concerning The Bible

•The Bible is a library made up of 66 books.

•Two main sections: the Old and the New Testament.

•The Old Testament has 39 books

•The New Testament has 27 books.

•These 66 books, have a total of 1,189 chapters

•The chapters total about 31,273 verses.

•The Bible was divided into chapters only 800 years ago.

(More than 1100 years after New Testament written.)

•In A.D. 1551 the New Testament was divided into verses.

•20 minutes a day, read the whole Bible in one year.

Pope Francis said, “If faith is to be strong and healthy, it must be constantly nourished by the Word of God.”

2. The Scriptures were not given to increase our knowledge but to supernaturally transform our lives

Mark Twain said, “It ain’t the those parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand.”

“People do not reject the Bible because it contradicts itself but because it contradicts them.”

Joshua 1:8 NIV – “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Scripture has 4 Senses to it – St. Thomas of Aquinas

•Literal – the actual meaning of the words

•Allegorical – the figurative sense of the words

•Moral – the meaning of the words that spurs us to a moral, christlike life•Anagogical – (leading) the mostly hidden, mystical sense of the rods, often pointing to some aspect of the afterlife

Psalms 1:1-3 ESV Blessed is the man[a] who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2  but his delight is in the law[b] of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3  He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

3. Knowing God’s Word enables you to Know God

John 5:39 NIV–  “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me..”

John Calvin said, “We owe to the scripture the same reverence which we owe God bc it proceeded from Him alone and has nothing belonging to man mixed with it”

God and His Word are the same – It’s not just words on a page, its a person – Jesus Christ.

John 1:1-5 ESV – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life,[a] and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Everything we are spiritually is because of God’s Word at work in our life. Therefore you will never be more spiritual than you are scriptural.

John 6:63 ESV –  It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Growing in the knowledge of the Word of God is essential to growing in the SuperNatural! The Words of God is the Works of God!

4. God’s Word will Outlast Any Shaking

Matthew 24:35 ESV – Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Bottom line: God’s word is eternal. Hold on to it! It will last longer than your problems

I Peter 1:23-25 ESV since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

“God’s Word is not obsolete, it is absolute.”

John 15:4-7 ESV Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

5. Read the Scriptures Habitually

Luke 4:16-19 ESV  And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

The Secret to your spiritual success is hidden in the daily routine of reading God’s Word

Lectio divina – Sacred Reading. It has 4 steps that we can apply today.

•Lectio – a selection or a reading

•Meditatio – Thinking over or meditation

•Oratio – Speaking or praying words

•Contemplatio – Contemplation

pastedGraphic.pngSpending time with God should be a lifelong habit, not a passing fancy. Research shows you need to do something for about six weeks straight to build a habit. Make God’s Word part of your life today — and for the rest of your life.

Hebrews 10:16 ESV – “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,”

“In our prayers, we talk to God, in our Bible study, God talks to us, and we had better let God do most of the talking.” – D.L. Moody

John 8:31 NKJV – Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.

When you get interested in God’s Word you get interested in God

•You can hear it, You can read it,You can study it,You can memorize it, You can meditate on it, and You can apply it

Charles Spurgeon said, “Nobody ever outgrows scripture, the book widens and deepens with our years.”

Living The Ultimate Life Pt.1

Living the Ultimate Life

In a Charles Schultz “Peanuts” cartoon, Lucy comes up to Charlie Brown and says, “You know, life is like an ocean liner.  Some people take their deck chair and put it on the stern, to see where they have been.  And some people put their deck chair on the bow, to see where they are going.  Charlie Brown, tell me, “Where do you want to put your deck chair?”  Perplexed momentarily, Charlie Brown looks at Lucy and says, “I don’t know.  I can’t even unfold my deck chair.”

Are you tired of living at the bottom when everyone around you seems to be rising to higher places? God’s Word has principles that will help you achieve the ultimate life that you desire. No more barely getting by and no more bottom of the barrel thinking. Whether it’s in your finances, your relationships, thoughts in your mind or desires in your heart God has a richer, fuller and more rewarding life in store for you if you live by the principles in His Word. It’s time to rise up, shake off the old ways and make a quality decision to do whatever it takes to be where God wants you to be in life. He wants you to live the ultimate life!

God’s Original Intent for YOU

In Genesis 1 – God made everything and declared it good.

Genesis 1:28 (NIV) 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

God’s plan was that He made man to be blessed and have a prosperous abundant life. It was His contract (covenant) with man.

•Be Fruitful – Always producing

•Multiply – Always increasing

•Replenish – Always fill and refill. Use and consume, but you are obligated by God to restock, refill, and replace what you’ve used.

•Subdue – Control your environment. If you don’t control your environment, your environment will control you.

Deuteronomy 28:13 (NIV) 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.

Jesus is declaring His intention to recover and restore God’s original intent

How many of us settle for just whatever kind of life?

•To make profound changes in you life, you need either inspiration or desperation

•Sad thing is 95% of christians settles for far less than they want in this life, wishing they had more, living with regret, and never understanding that they could be, do, and have MORE our of life

John 10:10 ESV – The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

•Do these seem like an empty promises to you and that God is simply baiting you to get your attention or do you really believe that God is able help you live the ultimate life.

•Are you experiencing all that God wants for you?

Abundant – existing or available in large quantities; plentiful. excessive, profuse, rich, lavish, abounding, liberal, generous, bountiful, large, huge, great, paramount, overflowing, prolific, extraordinary.

Life – Greek word Zoe (The God Kind of Life)

•Not only duration of life but Quality of life

John 6:63 NIV – The Spirit gives life (Zoe); the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[a] and life.

•Eternal life is the nature of God, the Zoe life. Zoe life doesn’t happen later, it happens NOW.

What Zoe will do for You!

John 1:4-5 (NIV) In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

•What’s in you and I (the ultimate life) cannot be overcome

I John 4:4 NIVYou, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

We Belong to God who called us to Live the Ultimate Life

I Peter 2:9 NIV –  But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

The Bible clearly states that Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Have you ever wondered who the other kings and lords are?

YOU are! You may not feel like one but you and I are kings and lords. The moment we received Christ as our Saviour.  God’s intention is that every believer would “reign as a king in this life through Jesus Christ”.

Revelation 1:5-6 NKJV and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed[a] us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings[b] and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Why is it that we readily accept the truth that Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, but we hesitate when it comes to the truth of who we are?

We are not called to “barely make it through this life” we are called to live the Ultimate Abundant prosperous life!

To Reign in Life is to Live the Ultimate Life

Romans 5:17 NIV17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

3 Profound Truths

1.It is possible to receive the abundance of God and to reign in this life

If we are not reigning in some areas, we are missing out on God’s best.

2. We are to reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

We cannot reign as a king and priest in our own power.

3. We reign in life because we have received the abundance of God’s grace and the gift of Jesus’ righteousness. (Salvation)

Ephesians 2:8-9 NIVFor it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

We are the righteousness of God. Therefore, we will reign in this life as kings. We are to reign as kings over….. (example:Ralph and Alice -The Honeymooners)

•our bodies, our minds, our homes, our circumstances, our finances, every power of darkness, and every sickness and disease.

Romans 8:16-17 NIV 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Ultimate Faith = Ultimate Life

Ephesians 3:20 NKJV – Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

In the Amplified version is says:…His power is able to do superabundantly, far over and above all that we dare ask or think {infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams}

“Faith is the art of holding on to things in spite of your changing moods and circumstances” CS Lewis

Faith is… To have trust or assurance, confidence, conviction, belief, reliance in what God says. Trust that produces actions.

Hebrews 11:1 KJV “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Amplified – Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, [a]the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].

“If you believe”….Numerous times in the Bible we are told that if we only believe THEN God will fulfill His promises. It starts with believing

Abraham is called the father of faith. As believers we have been adopted into his family. We are the seed of Abraham. That makes him our ancestor.

Take ownership of your position in the family of faith. God’s promise to Abraham is God’s promise to us:

Genesis 12:1-3 NIV – The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.[a] 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Abraham believed what God said. And because he believed what God said, God’s Word came to pass. What Abraham had inside of him to believe God is what is inside of you today.

Ephesians 1:17-19 NIV17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
– Mark 11:24

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
– Mark 9:23

Will You let your faith go to waste? God is searching for those who will believe and receive and live the ultimate life.

Hebrews 11:6 NIV “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

John 1:12 ESV But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

Believe that you can Live the Ultimate Abundant Prosperous Life!
