How to Get Up when You’ve been Knocked Down

Micah 7:8 ESV – Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me.

It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up. Vince Lombardi

Falling down doesn’t make you a failure, but staying down does! So you have to get up!

This is a human world. Falling down is just a part of life.

Mohammad Ali said, You Don’t lose if you get knocked down, You lose if you stay down.

“You don’t drown by falling in the water, you drown by staying there”

Examples

1. If JK Rowling stopped after being turned down by multiple publishers for years, while living out of her car, there would be no Harry Potter.

2. If Walt Disney quit after his Theme Park concept was trashed and turned down 302 times by Banks – there would be no Disney Land.

3. If Howard Schultz gave up after being turned down by banks 242 times, There would be no Starbucks.

4. Col. Sanders was rejected 1009 times for his Chicken recipe, and contemplated suicide.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 ESV – We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

3 Specific Times When Life knocks you down

  1. Satan Attacks using his devices, people, & demons
  2. Self Imposed – our own fault
  3. Uncontrollable Circumstances

I. THE FACTS

1. Getting Knocked Down is a fact of life.

(John 16:33) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

•Tribulation – Pressure, Oppression, stress, anguish, adversity, affliction, crushing, squeezing, distress

Getting knocked down in life is a given. Getting up and moving forward is a choice.

•We will not avoid trouble in this life – 2 Tim. 3:1 – Perilous (harsh, savage, difficult, dangerous, painful, hard to deal with)

2. Getting Knocked Down happens to everyone.

(Matthew 5:45) “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good,  and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

•”Life is 10 percent what happens to you, and 90 percent how you choose to deal with it” Lou Holtz

I Thessalonians 2:18 NIV For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way.

Hindered – Break up of a road to make it impassable for travelers. The result is that the trip is hindered, delayed, postponed, & inconvenient.

Key – Paul NEVER backed down! Never Stopped! He kept moving forward! Refuse to be dominated by blockades, hindrances, tough times, and attacks!

Your struggle is proof that you have not been defeated!

3. Getting Knocked Down won’t last forever.

(2 Corinthians 4:17) “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

•You are going to outlast it!  Get up and Go on!

4.  Getting Knocked Down can be good for us.

(1 Peter 1:7) “These have come so that your faith–of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire–may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

•Sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you’ve ever been. To Stand up taller than you’ve ever were.

•Faith is tested by hardships,  disappointments, and difficulties

•“God who foresaw your tribulation, has specifically armed you to go through it, not without pain, but without stain.” CS Lewis

•Some people go into the furnace of trouble and it burns them; others go in, and the experience builds them

II. 3 Keys That You Must Use to Get Up

I John 4:4 NIV – You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

You can’t really begin to appreciate life until it has knocked you down a few times. You cant really begin to appreciate love until your heart has been broken. And you really can’t begin to appreciate happiness until you’ve known sadness. Once you’ve walked through the valley, the view from the mountain top is breathtaking.

Your trouble is Satan’s desperation to stop you! But Who is in you is greater than What’s against you!

Romans 8:31-38 NIV – What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[j]37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  1. Courage

Psalm 31:24 ESV – Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!

We all are faced with discouragement.

Discouragement is to lose courage or hope; it is to become overwhelmed or lose heart. When we are discouraged it’s easy to want to quit–to stop doing the very things God told us to do.

Discouragement says, “What’s the use of trying anymore? Isn’t it time to just give up and make the best of it?” The nation of Israel faced that kind of discouragement.

“Success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It’s Courage that counts” Winston Churchill

Courage – is what makes someone capable of facing extreme danger and/or difficulty without retreating. It implies not only bravery and a dauntless spirit but the ability to endure times of adversity.

“You will never do anything worthwhile in this world without courage” James Allen

EnCOURAGE-ing Word for the weak,  afraid, and discouraged

Joshua 1:5-9 NIV No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

•Joshua was at a crucial time in his life. He was being coached by God to make an internal transition. To go from following to leading, to step into a new role, a new place, a new position in life.

Why? People will face DisCouragement – feeling of despair in the face of obstacles. It traps you inside yourself. It is subtle in its attack and powerful in it’s ability to paralyze your progress!

How it enters: We start evaluating our negative circumstances based upon info supplied by our senses.

“Courage is fear that has said it’s prayers”- Karl Barth

“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway” – John Wayne

“Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are stiffened.” Billy Graham

2. Perseverance

Psalm 18:31-37 NIV– For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? 32  It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. 33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. 34  He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 35  You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great. 36 You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. 37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed.

Perseverance – steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty, discouragement, or delay in achieving success. (Tracy Sagar)

Extraordinary people have 3 dominant traits. 1. They Respond positively to all challenges and learn from mistakes 2. Take personal initiative 3. Have great perserverance

Those who persevere are the ones left standing when everyone else quits.

Perseverance is rooted in Severe which means, great discomfort, damage, dangerous, distress, difficult. Stretch or extreme

Mohammad Ali said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said Don’t quit, suffer now and live the rest of your life like a champion”

“By perseverance the snail reached the ark – Charles Spurgeon

“Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.”

Don’t Give up! Don’t Back Down! Tenacious Unsinkable people don’t quit bc of circumstances, rejections, or problems! They Persevere!

It’s Always too soon to Quit!

In 1972, NASA launched the exploratory space probe Pioneer 10. The satellite’s primary mission was to reach Jupiter, photograph it and its moons, and beam data it collected about this giant planet back to earth. Scientists regarded this as a bold plan, because up until then no satellites had gone beyond Mars, and they feared the asteroid belt would destroy the satellite before it would ever get to Jupiter. But Pioneer 10 accomplished its mission and much, much more. Flying past Jupiter in November 1973, the space probe continued its incredible journey toward the edge of our solar system. At one billion miles from the sun, Pioneer 10 passed Saturn. At some two billion miles, it hurtled past the planet Uranus, then past Neptune, at nearly three billion miles, and Pluto, at almost four billion miles. By 1997, 25 years after its launch, Pioneer 10 was more than six billion miles from the sun. And it’s still going. Though now nearly 8 billion miles from the sun, the satellite keeps sending signals; some were received as recently as April 27, 2002. And despite that immense distance, Pioneer 10 continues to beam back radio signals to scientists on Earth. Commenting on the Pioneer 10 in Time magazine Leon Jaroff says, “Perhaps most remarkable, is the fact that those signals emanate from an eight-watt transmitter, which radiates about as much power as a bedroom night-light, and take more than nine hours to reach Earth.””The Little Satellite That Could” was not qualified to do what it did. Engineers designed Pioneer 10 with a useful life of only three years. But it has kept going and going and going. By simple longevity, its tiny eight-watt transmitter radio accomplished more than anyone thought possible. So it is when we offer ourselves to serve the Lord. God can work even through someone with only eight-watt abilities. God cannot work, however, through someone who gives up and quits.(Craig Brian Larson, Pastoral Grit: The Strength to Stand and to Stay; Bethany House, 1998)

Matthew 24:13 NIV – but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Story: Sir Edmund Hillary was attempting to scale Mt. Everest and lost one of his team members in a failed effort. He returned with a hero’s welcome in London where a banquet was held in his honor and attended by all the powerful people of Great Britain.

Behind the speaker’s platform, they had hung a huge blown up photo of Mt. Everest. When Sir Edmund Hillary rose to receive the acclaim of this distinguished audience, he turned around, faced the picture and said…

“Mt. Everest, you have defeated me… but I will return!

And I will defeat you! Because you can’t get any bigger… and I can!”

Eventually, he did scale that huge Mt. and was the 1st man to ever do so… but the lesson is this… Because God is sticking with us… no matter what the challenge, no matter how many failures we have to endure… the fact is, God is using them to help us grow BIGGER!

Regardless of what life throws at us, with His help, we’ll always come out ahead!

James 1:12 NIV – Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

II Timothy 4:7 NIV – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

“We conquer by continuing.”- George Matheson

3. Faith

This is your position above your problems

Joel Osteen said, We may get knocked down on the outside, but the key to living in victory is to learn how to get up on the inside.

I John 5:4 ESV – For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Overcomes (Nikos) – To conquer, Champion of the games

Faith is… To have trust or assurance, confidence, conviction, belief, reliance in what God says. Trust that produces action. Faith is a living force, drawn from the living word, to produce living results.

Romans 8:37 NIV – No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

(hypernikos)- more than, over above and beyond, greater, top notch, paramount, ovwhelming enormous

•This is the kind of FAITH God puts on the inside of YOU!

“Faith is the art of holding on to things in spite of your changing moods and circumstances” CS Lewis

Authentic faith does not deny the obstacles of life, but rather declares God is greater than the obstacles

Mark 9:23 NIV ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

“Faith does not operate in the realm of the possible. There is no glory for God in that which is humanly possible. Faith begins where man’s power ends.”- George Muller

I Timothy 1:18-20 ESV – This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

•860 AD – Nero was blaming christians for burning down Rome, Disciples were being killed, false teaching was being taught.

•Holding Faith – Kutecheo – To hold on with a firm grip; desperate hold

•Paul Was telling Timothy  – HOLD ON! DON’T LET GO & Shipwreck your faith!

Hebrews 10:23 ESV – Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. (Jacob)

Holding faith connects you to the Power of God!

If you give up to soon, you’ll never know what you’ll be missing. Never Give up and never Stop Believing!

Revelation 2:25 ESV – Only hold fast what you have until I come.

Hebrews 10:36-39 NIV – You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For,“In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”[a] 38 And, “But my righteous[b] one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.”[c] 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

“How to Become an Effective, Life Giving Team Leader”

Firstborn

“How to Become an Effective, Life Giving Team Leader”

2 Timothy 1:13-14 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Pastors, we must be keepers of the culture. If we are weak on our culture, others will come in and define it for us. Therefore we have the God given responsibility to set the culture.

Culture – Predominating attitudes and behaviors that characterizes the function of the organization.

GOAL – Life Giving Culture

John 10:10 NIV – The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Some of Our Culture Attitudes at GraceTown….

  1. Leadership
  2. Serving – Everyone should be serving somewhere, if not they are not on the map
  3. Excellence
  4. Passion
  5. Fun
  6. Authenticity

Churches have barriers to growth – 100, 200, 500, 800, 1000. Although each barrier is unique, there are 3 key factors that apply to every barrier we will face as a church.

1. Inspiring and consistently excellent worship services

•Our services are WELL PLANNED, but feel FLEXIBLE and UNRUSHED. They are upbeat but relaxed.

•We only have 52 Sunday’s a year and every single one needs to count!

2. Clear pathways to Connection and involvement

3. Effective and life giving Structure and administration

Don’t be afraid to lead – rid yourself of the thinking that you are inadequate or unqualified.

Leadership is Influence – John Maxwell

Our day today is an emotionally charged, overweight burden down society that needs LIFE, from life giving leadership!

What Life Giving Leadership Is:

A. Leadership is not a project, leadership is a spirit. People don’t need a position to be a leader.

B. Leadership must give encouragement and confidence

C. Joshua’s Leadership Training –

Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid, do not be dismayed.”

•God was focusing on Joshua’s spirit before the task.

D. For God to get us to where he would like us to be, He needs us to realize our leadership is more about a spirit than a task. Be strong, inspired, and full of courage, life and purpose. Life Giving Leadership

•Leadership is more than information, communication, and projects. Leadership is spirit

•Remember this – “Your Leadership can be something that people have to overcome, or something that helps people overcome.” – Kevin Gerald

F. It should cause people to lighten up

  • When the life of God is flowing, there should be lots of smiling and laughing. (Seattle fish market – a fun place to work)

G. Life Giving leadership is positive and inspiring –

Proverbs 16:15 (message) says, “Good tempered leaders invigorate lives; they’re life spring rain and sunshine.”

H. We will not resort to a negative, forceful, or whiney approach to motivate. This leads to immaturity.

I. To be an effective leader – STAY POSITIVE.

J. Leaders are like an elevator – you are either taking people up or taking them down. Make a decision to take people up!’

Life Giving Leaders are…

1. Life Giving leaders are always growing and reaching to improve their leadership. Take responsibility for your own failures as well as successes. If you keep learning, you will improve, and your leadership will get better.

2. Life Giving leaders are pushing the boundary lines to move beyond what is normal or usual. Leaders are pioneers. They venture into unexplored territory and guide to new and often unfamiliar destinations.

3. Life Giving leaders are risk-takers. They reject the maintenance mentality and take risks from strength, preparing thoroughly, understanding what is at stake, and marching forward with confidence. It is never too late to be what you might have become!

4. Life Giving leaders are resource finders and releasers. They have built a leadership pipeline that finds potential leaders, trains them, and releases them to greater levels of ministry.

5. Life Giving leaders are future-focused and dedicated to do whatever it takes to get there. Their faith capacity has increased to believe that God will provide all that is necessary as the need arises. Their people capacity is increased so that getting along with and caring for people is at the leader’s heart.

Our Commitment each Sunday

Remember Team – It’s a Privilege and opportunity to serve. It’s never asking too much of people to serve.

1. Each person I encounter today is loved by God & needs to feel special.

2. I need to make a personal impact through a smile, a word of kindness or an act of love.

3. I will remember what it feels like to be new.

4. My responsibility is not simply to carry out a task but to engage each person individually.

5. I am vitally important to impacting lives today.

6. I will be in a great mood on Sundays & will not let anyone or anything Hijack my great mood

7. I will be ready to meet any need that arises

8. I will have a sense of responsibility for everything that happens on Sunday

9. I will focus on People and processes

10. During service I will be alert, take notes & be an example in Worship

The Power of Team Partnerships

Rowing-745
The Power of Team Partnership

Exodus 17:8-13 NIV The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

Everybody needs Somebody. Ministry is never meant to be done alone.

All Good Things Flow From Relationship
•When God found you…he found you alone
* When He saved you…he saved you alone
* But He called you into the family of God
* 2 are better than 1

Andrew Carnegie said, “It marks a big step in your development when you come to realize that other people can help you do a better job than you can do alone.”

Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”

As an organization and leader we should encourage Flexibility, Change, and Innovation

One of the things that separates winning and losing teams is how the team’s good players are placed. Take a look at what I mean:

The wrong person in the wrong place = regression
The wrong person in the right place = frustration
The right person in the wrong place = confusion
The right person in the right place = progression
The right PEOPLE in the Right Place = MULTIPLICATION

The Power of Partnership

“God is look for people through whom He can do the impossible – what a pity that we plan only the things we can do by ourselves.” AW Tozer

Partnerships at GraceTown will not be a preference but a Requirement!

1. Partnership UNIFIES for Strength

•Partnership works together to support God’s leadership and win the battle – Aaron & Hur

2. Partnership IDENTIFIES opportunities

•Partnership ignores the nay sayers and claim God’s promises – Joshua & Caleb

3. Partnership INTENSIFIES commitment to one another

•Partnership commit to journey together and be spiritually linked – Ruth & Naomi

4. Partnership PURIFIES motives

•Partners trust unconditionally and take risks unreservedly – David & Jonathan

5. Partnership SOLIDIFIES new alliances

•Partnerships take on daunting tasks and refuse to stop until the work is done – Nehemiah and the wall builders

“The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team” John Wooden

One person can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one person cannot make a team. The team player is the one who makes things go – the one who is willing to do and sacrifice whatever it takes to make the team successful.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NIV – Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:10  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Romans 12:4-5 NIV –  For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others

“You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together, we can do great things.” Mother Teresa

It’s Ok not to be Ok

It's Okay
IT’S OK TO NOT BE OKAY

Romans 8:1-2 ESV – There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.[a] 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you[b] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Are you one of those people that are GOOD at being BAD, and BAD at being GOOD?

There’s a common idea that being a CHRIST FOLLOWER means you must
be a “next to perfect” person…or at least pretend to be. Along with that
idea is the idea that people who attend church regularly are next to perfect or at least pretending to be.
• This idea causes some people to feel like they don’t qualify to be a
Christian….It hinders some people from attending church…getting involved in a church

“God does not love sinners because they are attractive; sinners are attractive to God because he loves them.” Luther

• This idea also makes it hard for believers to be honest about their struggles…their issues…and often times causes them to cover up what God wants to help them overcome.

EX: Bible Characters (see below)
Noah was a drunk
Abraham was too old
Isaac was a daydreamer
Jacob was a liar
Leah was ugly
Joseph was abused
Moses had a stuttering problem
Samson had long hair and was a womanizer
Rahab was a prostitute
Jeremiah and Timothy were too young
David has an affair and was a murderer & liar
Isaiah preached naked
Jonah ran from God
Peter denied Christ, The Disciples fell asleep while praying, Zaccheus was too small, Paul was too religious, Lazarus was dead!

God sees the best in the worst of us, knows the worst about the best of us, & loves us all without condition or exception.

The truth is that Good people, Gods people, are not exempt from hurts,
habits and hang ups. That church is not just for people who are OK….in
fact, if you’re not ok and you know you’re not ok there’s no better place
for you than God’s church! In fact, we all have struggles of some kind…products of Sin—our own and other people’s…

• If you were abandoned…abused…a child of divorce…
• If you grew up without a father or a mother…
• If you were molested or raped…
• If you were shown pornography at a young age…developed an appetite for pornography
• If you learned hate… or deception…
• If your parents divorced…
• If you were demeaned or verbally abused…

THEN CHANCES ARE…YOU’RE NOT OK…

–YOU’RE UNDISCIPLINED OR ANGRY, HURT, SHORT FUSED, SELF
DESTRUCTIVE, CAUGHT IN A VICE, ADDICTED TO HABITS THAT ENSLAVE YOU…

–IT DOESN’T MEAN GOD LOVES YOU LESS OR YOU LOVE GOD LESS…BUT IT DOES MEAN THAT GOD HAS SOMETHING A LOT BETTER FOR YOU… AND THAT YOUR ENEMY HAS FOUND A WAY TO KEEP YOU FROM EXPERIENCING GOD’S PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE!

John 10:10 NIV – The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

EX: Physical visible injuries/ invisible injuries/ BROKENNESS= people crippled internally…broken internally…wounded but looking fine on the outside. All of this BROKENNESS is the product of Sin…our own or someone else’s…but the brokenness originates in Sin.

IT’S OK TO NOT BE OKAY…IF YOU’RE ON YOUR WAY TO BEING OKAY!
IT’S NOT OK….

1) TO JUSTIFY IT.
This is when we say things like…

• At least I’m not as bad as some people…
• If you had been through what I’ve been through…you would be too!
• There are a lot worse things than what I do…

This may be true…BUT THE LAW CAME TO CONFRONT US WITH THE SERIOUSNESS OF SIN AND THE DEPTH OF GOD’S GRACE.

Romans 5:18-21 The Message (MSG) 18-19 Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right. 20-21 All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn’t, and doesn’t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it’s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that’s the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life—a life that goes on and on and on, world without end.

• We can not know the depth of God’s Grace unless you understand the
seriousness of our sin!! It’s not ok to justify anything about our lives that misses the mark of God’s plan and purpose.

2) TO NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

Proverbs 28:13 NIV – Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

This is when we say things like…

• I can’t help it…It’s to hard…
• I’ve tried to change and can’t…
• I just like to Party…
•I just like to eat…
•I have a high, insatiable sex appetite

TO LIE ABOUT IT.
Proverbs 12:19 NIV – Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

Proverbs 12:22 NIV – The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.

Until you’re ready to be honest about it and make the decisions necessary to change you can have 10 accountability partners, 20 counselors, you can have 1000 angels watching over you, you can all have that, Jesus can visit you in the flesh, but until YOU’RE READY, nothing is going to change… Ladies and Gentleman, I can’t fix you today.

TO BLAME.

Matthew 7:3-5 ESV – Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Genesis 3:8-13 (NIV) 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

God called Adam on the carpet…”What are you doing?”…Why are you going after stuff that will mess you and your kids up?…

Adam= “It’s the woman’s fault…Eve lured me into it”… ever since then people have been blaming someone else for their problems.

TO BEAT YOURSELF UP OVER IT.

Psalms 38:4-8 NIV – My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly. I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. Self condemnation and guilt works nothing good in your life. In fact, it only leads to an internalizing the defeat. Before anything good can happen you have to stop beating yourself up and start getting yourself up!!

***Emotional softness and self pity may be the most common reason people remain broken. ANY TIME YOU SEE PEOPLE EMBRACING A NEW LIFE….YOU WILL SEE TEARS/STRUGGLE….IF THEY PUSH
THROUGH THEY EXPERIENCE A NEW LEVEL OF MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL STRENGTH…

IF NOT…THEY STAY SOFT/GIVE UP TOO EASY…AND NEVER GO TO ANOTHER LEVEL OF SELF WILL AND DETERMINATION.

ACTION ITEMS:

WHEN YOU’RE READY FOR GOD TO HEAL THE BROKENNESS AND BEGIN THE PROCESS OF MAKING YOU A NEW PERSON…

TURN YOUR LIFE OVER TO HIM.

His will over your will and his ways over your ways.

• Ask God to do for you what only he can do…He won’t do what you
can do but he will do what you can’t do!!

Philippians 3:12-14 NIV –  Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
The Message –  I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.
• Work like it’s all up to you and Pray like it’s all up to God!

2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

2) EMBRACE ACCOUNTABILITY.

You can’t do it on your own.

Proverbs 27:17 NIV – As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

You will need a new schedule and a new lifestyle. One way to tip the
favor/strength to your advantage is to PUT YOURSELF IN A POSITION OF
ACCOUNTABILITY. THIS IS WHAT CHAMPIONS DO!!!

Say to a coach…I want to be a champion… I need you…..Please hold
me accountable for the changes I need to make.

Romans 14:12 NIV – So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING THE LIFE YOU WANT TO LIVE.

(1 Corinthians 15:33) “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.”

(Proverbs 13:20) “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”

RECEIVE AN ABUNDANCE OF GRACE

Rom 5:17 NIV -For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

5) RENEW YOUR MIND DAILY.
Romans 12:1-3 NIV – Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

• The mind of a broken person cannot produce the life of a healthy person.
• The mind of defeat won’t produce victory.
• The mind of fear will produce a different life than a mind of FAITH
• The mind of low self-worth will sabotage the great things God has for
you.

WHEN YOU THINK DIFFERENT YOUR LIFE WILL BE DIFFERENT!

We need to re-train and re-program your mind SO YOU CAN EXPERIENCE THE LIFE GOD HAS FOR YOU!

6) NEVER QUIT.

YOU WILL REACH GOALS!….you WILL experience God birthing NEW LIFE in you…NEW STRENGTHS in you… But there will never be a time to go back to your old life….your old ways.

You are now experiencing THE EVIDENCE of what the Bible calls a
“NEW CREATION” You’re overcoming…You’re a different person…But you’re still engaged in a battle for God’s

Psalm 27:13-14. I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Psalm 22:26 (MSG). Here in this great gathering for worship I have discovered this praiselife. And I’ll do what I promised right here in front of the God-worshipers. Down-and-outers sit at God’s table and eat their fill. Everyone on the hunt for God is here, praising him.

“Live it up, from head to toe. Don’t ever quit!”

March Madness Pt 4 – The Triple Threat

Kobe Bryant triple threat position against Trevor Ariza of the Rockets

March Madness Pt 4 – The Triple Threat

(Mark 12:30 NIV) “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

(Revelation 3:15-16) “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold–I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

Today I want to talk to you about another aspect of basketball that has implications for us in life and in our Christian walk. I want to talk to you about fundamentals. Unfortunately, talking about fundamentals isn’t real glamorous or sexy. We feel like this about the fundamentals. We view fundamentals as just practice. It is the boring day in day out stuff that doesn’t really matter.

there are fundamentals that must be brushed up on constantly. It doesn’t matter how professional or skilled you become. You must constantly revisit the basics and stay proficient in them.

So let’s talk about one of the most fundamental things you ever learn in basketball. The triple threat position is basic basketball. It is in fact, one of the first things you ever learn in basketball. What is the triple threat position? It is called the triple threat position because from this position you can do three things. You can pass, you can dribble, or you can shoot.

It is when you master these three fundamentals that you are a formidable opponent on the court. It takes all three elements to be complete. If all you can do is shoot, then I will guard you and keep you from shooting. If all you can do is pass, I won’t worry about your shot and I will lay off of you and play the passing lanes. If all you can do is dribble, then you are stuck for sure and you will be ineffective. It is when someone has developed proficiency in all 3 areas (passing, dribbling, and shooting) that they are next to impossible to stop, contain, or guard.

The Fundamentals of Spiritual growth is not determined how you act in church but how you respond to life.

•Hot – You are growing.

(2 Thessalonians 1:3) “We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing.”

“The soul’s deepest thirst is for God Himself, who has made us so that we can never be satisfied without Him.” FF Bruce

•Cold – You do not know God yet.

(2 Corinthians 4:4) “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

page1image24776
 •Lukewarm – You are drifting.

(Hebrews 2:1) “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”

How to Get There

•Grow yourself daily.

Hebrews 6:1) “Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity…”

(Proverbs 23:12) “Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.”

(Jeremiah 29:13-14) “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD

As a church, we don’t define ourselves by what we do on Sundays. SG is lifetime

1. Worship

  1. Psalm 100:4 GWT – “Enter his gates with a song of thanksgiving. Come into his courtyards with a song of praise”

  2. Psalm 103.1 NLT – “Praise the Lord, I tell myself; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name”

  3. John 4:23 NIV – Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.”

  4. Everybody worships something. It is the response of what you value most.

  5. In every heart there is an altar and a throne. Follow the trail of your time, your affection, your energy, your money, your loyalty, your thoughts, dreams & ambitions, & your priorities. You will find who or what is sitting on the throne of your heart!

  6. Mark 12:30 NIV – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, and all your mind, and all your strength.”

  7. Worship is (begins on Sundays)
    i. Expressing my affection to God – Praise
ii. Focusing my attention on God – Prayer & meditation iii. Using my abilities for God – Serving
iv. Tozer said, without worship, we go about miserable

page2image18488
 2. The Bible, God’s Word
  1. Hebrews 4:12 NIV – “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

    1. The Bible is authoritive not bc it is a manuel for living, but bc it reveals to us JESUS who has the power to CUT through all our BOLONEY.

    2. “The Scriptures were not given to increase our knowledge but to change our lives”

  2. Joshua 1:8 NIV – “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night,
so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

  3. Psalm 119:11 NIV – “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

  4. The Bible is not just a book; it is a God breathed, God indwelt, God inspired message. We are to believe what the Bible says, not what we think it says of what someone else says that it says.

    i. 66 books, 1,189 chapters, 31,273 verses

ii. It will outlast heaven & earth (Matt. 24:35)

  5. Mark Twain said, “It ain’t the those parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand.”

  6. In our pursuit of seeking God, we must become interested in the Word of God.

    i. John Calvin said, “We owe to the scripture the same reverence which we owe God bc it proceeded from Him alone…”

  7. Knowing God’s Word is the Pathway to Knowing God
    i. John 5:39 NIV- “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me..”

3. Prayer

a. Get Your heart right with God

i. I John 1:9 – “If we can confess our sins, HE is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”

Psalm 139:23-24 – “Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

I Thessalonians 5:17 NLT – “Never Stop Praying”

Psalm 5:3 NIV – “In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.”
  1. i. My Pastor (J Hugh Rose) used to say, “Don’t stop praying and don’t stop believing in the results of your prayers.”

  2. Have confidence in your relationship with God.

(Hebrews 4:16) “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

  3. The power in prayer is not the person praying BUT God who is hearing.

    i. Matthew 19:26 CEV – “Jesus looked straight at them and said, “There are some things that people cannot do, but GOD CAN DO ANYTHING.”

  4. Release your faith with absolute assurance in God’s Ability

•I John 5:14-15 NIV – “This is the confidence we have in approaching God; that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us- whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.”

    x. God does not answer our prayer simply because we have a specific need – He answers our prayers when we pray in line with His Word

xi.Remember – Don’t forget to pray today because God didn’t forget to wake you up this morning

The Urban Era for Ohio State

This was a great day for my son and I. We had lunch with 2 Time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, The Ohio State Buckeyes new head football Coach Urban Meyer, and Coach Earl Bruce. We had an incredible time where we were able to converse, hear the direction from Coach Meyers for the upcoming season, ask questions (which I did), and ate an incredible lunch. We are very excited about our Buckeyes!
