What To Do When Storms Come

A storm by definition is a disburbance of the normal condition of the atmosphere manifesting itself by winds of unusual force and direction.

When our lives have been turned upside down by illness, financial difficulty, job loss, relational and marital problems, or some other force that upsets the normal condition of our lives, we are facing a storm.

Remember the Song “Stormy Weather” – “Don’t know why there’s no sun up in the sky Stormy weather Since my woman and I ain’t together, Keeps rainin’ all of the time..Life is bare, gloom and mis’ry everywhere Stormy weather And I just can’t get my poorself together, I’m weary all the time So weary all the time….All I do is pray the Lord above will let me walk in the sun once more. I can’t go on, can’t go on, can’t go on, ev’ry thing I had is gone Stormy weather

Luke 8:22-25 NIV – One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

•Squall – a sudden violent gust of wind or a localized storm, especially one bringing rain, snow, or sleet.

Take note: Jesus said “let’s go over to the other side.” FYI – He knew about the Storm.

•Don’t ever assume God will lead you around a storm or you can avoid storms in this life

Before we know it, fierce winds destroy our happiness, dreams and ultimately our lives as we struggle to stay afloat.  In todays msg, we will explore how to move forward when the storms hold us back.

When the storms of life strike, it’s what happens in you that will determine what happens to you.

It’s amazing how quickly the storms of life strike, isn’t it?  Just like that, so many times out of no where.

Storms never dictate God’s Direction

•He’s never surprised of the storm

•He will lead you through the storm

•Jesus is not only in the quiet places but also the chaotic places

•If you go where God leads you you will go through a storm to get there.

Jesus asks them….”Where is Your Faith? Storms locate our faith

What to remember about storms

1. Storms are inevitable.

When it comes to storms, it’s not a matter of if, but when.

•You’re probably – Entering a storm – Engaging a storm – Emerging from a storm

The storm in Luke still happened even though Jesus was on board…Never says, life with me will be a three hour tour

John 16:33 NIV –  “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Storms right now

•Hurricanes Harvey and Irma

•National Debt is $19 Trillion Dollars

•War on Terror

•Killings of Black men and cops

•Financial anxiety

•Loss of Job

•family member with cancer, sickness, or disease

•Our faith is strong on Sunday but absent on Monday

Isaiah 26:3 NIV – You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

Peace – It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or storms. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

2. Storms are unpredictable.

You can’t plan them, time them, schedule them

Jeremiah 4:20 NIV –  “Disaster follows disaster; the whole land lies in ruins.  In an instant my tents are destroyed, my shelter in a moment.”

3. Storms are temporary.

They have an end to them – They don’t last

Hebrews 10:35-37 NIV –  “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.  You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.  For in just a very little while, He who is coming will come and will not delay.”

CS Lewis said…, “God who foresaw your tribulation (storm) has especially armed you to go through it, not without pain, but without stain.” 

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 NIV For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

4. Storms are opportunities.

There is an old parable that says: All sunshine and no rain makes a desert – can have value

God wants to build your faith in the storms of life

•Can find purpose in the middle of a storm

•Our faith can be strengthened in the middle of a storm

•Our faith is tested by the storms of life

1 Peter 1:6-7 NIV- “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  These have come so that your faith–of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire–may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

“A smooth sea, never made a skillful mariner. neither does uninterrupted prosperity and success qualify for usefulness and happiness.”

Charles Spurgeon said…”No faith is as precious as that which lives and triumphs in adversity”

John Calvin said, “Whatever sort of tribulation or storm we suffer, we should always remember that its purpose is to make us spurn the present and reach out to the future.”

Where’s Your Faith?

Faith does not mean trusting God to stop the storm, but trusting Him to strengthen us as we walk through the storm.

Psalm 23:4 NIV  “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

  1. Refuse to be Negative and Fearful.

Psalm 27:1 NIV – The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

•365 times in the Bible it says “Fear Not”

Focus on the positive

•Faith is a trust in God. A belief that He knows what he’s doing regardless of the external circumstance.

•Focus on whats right not whats wrong – when you focus on whats wrong it consumes you spiritually. Don’t be obsessed with crisis and bad news.

“Some people are so negative that when they walk into a room the lights go out.”

Take two people in the same situation – One is destroyed by it – the other grows in it – choice

Colossians 1:11 NIV –  “God will strengthen you with his own great power so that you will not give up when troubles come, but you will be patient.”

When your faith becomes bigger, the storms become smaller.

2. Remember that God is with me.

“For you are with me” – not only power – but presence From “He” to “You” – up close and personal with God

Nahum 1:3 NIV – The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.

•Your storm is Satan’s desperation to stop.

•Your greatest breakthrough comes from your greatest storm

Isaiah 43:2 NLT – When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression,  you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.

3. Rely on God’s protection and guidance.

“Your rod and staff comfort me” – rod and staff – protect and guide

Psalm 34:19 LB –  “The good man does not escape all troubles — he has them too.  But the Lord helps him in each and every one.”

•Not all storms come because of where you’ve been or what you’ve done – But where you are going and what your going to do.

•Great resistance always proceeds great Opportunity – Satan fears where you are going and who is with you!

Psalm 91:1-16 NIV – Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. 9 If you say, “The LORD is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, 10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 14 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

REMEMBER: 

  1. When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person that walked in. That’s what the storm is all about.

2. God never leads us into a storm He doesn’t give us the power to overcome.

I pray today for my friends in Texas, Florida, and the East Coast. I pray that those who have experienced harm will have grace in restoring, rebuilding, and recovering, and that those facing danger will have safety, protection, and peace from the Faithful One—the One who is always with us.

1. If you want to Improve the life you have, You have to change the thoughts you think

Thoughts are like trains they take you somewhere. Therefore, Life will always move in the direction of your strongest thoughts.

Proverbs 23:7 NKJV “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”

“You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” James Allen

When you change how you think, you will change what you do, which th n will change the results in you life. 

Where you are today is a collection of the thoughts you had yesterday; where you go tomorrow is based on your thoughts today. 

You’re not what you think you are, but what you think…you are.

Proverbs 4:23 NCV “Be careful what you think because your thoughts run your life.”

Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, you’re right. If you think you can’t, you’re right.”

Why? Because you mind is the drawing room for your tomorrow. What happens in your mind will happen in time.

Benjamin Disraeli said, “nurture your mind with great thoughts, for you will never go any higher than you think.”

Our thoughts determine our Outcomes.

(Romans 8:5-6 NLT) “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death. But if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace.”

  2. Imagination – PrePlay the Future

•You can use (Jesus) or misuse (Tower of Babel) your imagination

Images, Impressions, Visions, and thoughts are connected

In your mind, you can go to your past or to your future. You decide. Your mind is not restricted by location. God gave you a MIND so He can give you a picture of where He wants to take you.

(Cast down Negative Imaginations and Replace them) •Quote (2 Cor.10:5)

Negative thoughts never lead to a positive life.

Romans 12:1-3 NIV Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Ephesians 4:22-24 NLT 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

What to Think:                                                                                                  

Philippians 4:8-9 NIV “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things… and the God of peace will be with you.

When your Mind is filled with Thoughts, Images, and Meditations on the promises of God, the by product is An Extraordinary Prosperous Life.

Colossians 3:2 “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.”

Remember: God paints your future success on the canvas of you mind

Amos 4:13 NIV- He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth— the Lord God Almighty is his name. 

Isn’t that awesome? The God who set the mountains in place puts the thoughts in your mind. How you think matters to God!

II. If you want to improve the life you have, you have to change the words you speak

Small changes in the words we speak—big difference in the life we live.

Proverbs 18:21 NIV “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit (Moffatt translation – “Determined” by the tongue)

Words were an important element in God’s work of creation. The plan of creation had been set in place, but God had to speak the words before it could become a visible reality. (Genesis 1) – Words carry creative power! 

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightening and a lightening bug – mark twain 

My Words Direct where I go

James 3:3-5 NLT We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.

Your future does not respond to anyone’s voice but your own

My Words Produce What I can Have

Mark 11:23 ESV – Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

We are not missing it in our believing, we are missing it with our words

By getting God’s Word deep into your spirit and speaking it boldly out your mouth, you release spiritual power to change things in the natural circumstances.

Start saying things you want to happen in your life, not what you don’t want to happen! Jesus said to speak to the mountain, not about the mountain.  Jesus said you can have what you say, but you have been saying what you have

The Words we speak indicate what we believe in our hearts and ultimately determine what we will receive in life

Remember, Every time you open your mouth, your mind walks out and parades up and down the words.

Luke 6:45 NIV  A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

My Words can destroy what I have.

James 3:5-6 NIV “Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire…it sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

Proverbs 21:23 NLT – Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.

You never saw a fish on the wall with its mouth shut

Anyone who controls their words is literally protecting their own life

Proverbs 13:2-3 NLT – Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence. 3 Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.

If you think of something hurtful – swallow it

Words are Spiritual – They Carry Power

Matthew 12:34-37 The Message – “You have minds like a snake pit! How do you suppose what you say is worth anything when you are so foul-minded? It’s your heart, not the dictionary, that gives meaning to your words. A good person produces good deeds and words season after season. An evil person is a blight on the orchard. Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.”

Our Words must please God

Psalm 19:14 NIV May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

God’s Word and Strong positive affirmations are powerful means of self-transformation, and they are a key element in the creation of the life you desire. They work by purposely replacing limiting ideas, negative beliefs, and self-talk you have taken on and internalized

over the years with positive statements that assert who you want to be, and how to experience life.

The thoughts and words that are put into your heart will create the world you live in.

Salvation

Romans 10:9-12 NLT – If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. 11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”[a] 12 Jew and Gentile[b] are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him.

God is able and willing to work miracles in and through any person who has a heart to believe in His unlimited power and unlimited possibilities. Miracles are for YOU today!

Psalm 77:14 NIV – You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.

Declaration:

“God wants my life to be full of Miracles. My Life itself is a Miracle. Miracles are happening to me continuously . I wake daily and experience the miracle of living. My miracles are expanding and accelerating. Today I expect and happily receive miracles.”

There is NO such thing as a hopeless situation. Every single circumstance of your life can change.

Miracle – an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs. A supernatural manifestation of divine power in the external world. a spontaneous expression of God’s elemental power.

Acts 10:44 NIV – While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.

Something IMMEDIATELY happened when they HEARD the WORD OF GOD. 

Romans 10:17 ESV So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

If what you hear preached doesn’t cause faith to come and build faith in your spirit, then it either isn’t the Word of God or else you’re not hearing it

1. God’s Word is Everything God is (Miraculous, Spirit, Breath, Life, Presence, Power)

John 1:1-5 NIV – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

John 6:63 NIV – The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. 

2 Timothy 3:14-16 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

Inspiration is compound of the words “Theos” (God) and “Pneuma” (Spirit) – God Breathed – Inspiration of God

God’s Word is not the product of elevated human consciousness or enlightened human intellect. This is God breathing HIS very own breath and presence into something.

2. God’s Word has the ability to create, destroy, and perfect

Hebrews 11:3 NIV – By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

•We use words to describe, God uses Words to Create (Genesis 1)

Colossians 1:16 NIV – For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

Mark 11:12-14, 22-24 NIV12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it. 22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[d] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

•Your Mountain needs to hear God’s Word and Your Voice

By getting God’s Word deep into your spirit and speaking it boldly out your mouth, you release spiritual power to change things in the natural circumstances.

3. God’s Word is Living (All 66 books, 1, 189 Chapters, 31, 273 Verses)

Hebrews 4:12 NLT – For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

Isaiah 40:8 NIV – The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

Matthew 24:35 NIV – Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

I Peter 1:23-25 NIV – For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.24 For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[a] And this is the word that was preached to you.

Abideth – To dwell, To remain, to last

4. God will Perform His Word

•Perform – to carry out an action or pattern of behavior; To begin and carry through to completion;

•Believing God’s word means What God says will come to pass

• Instead of believing what you see – Choose to believe what Jesus said!

Jeremiah 1:12 ESV – Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”

Isaiah 55:8-11 NIV – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it

Ezekiel 12:28 NIV – Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

Hebrews 10:35-38 ESV – Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay;38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.”

5. God’s Word Can Produce Immediate Miracles

•Immediately – without delay

•Quit saying WHEN, and Start saying NOW

•Faith says I have it NOW – Hope says I’ll get it later. Bring your Faith into the NOW Realm.

Hebrews 11:1 KJV “NOW faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Amplified – NOW faith is the assurance (the confirmation, [a]the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].

“If you believe”….Numerous times in the Bible we are told that if we only believe THEN God will fulfill His promises. It starts with believing. There is incredible power in belief.

Ephesians 3:20 NKJV – NOW to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

In the Amplified version is says:…His power is able to do superabundantly, far over and above all that we dare ask or think {infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams}

WE can Expect Immediate Miracles

Psalm 31:5 NIV – Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.

Psalm 69:17 NIV – Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.

Psalm 79:8 NIV – Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

Psalm 102:2 NIV – Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.

What has taken time, can begin to happen IMMEDIATELY – We have a right to believe God for Immediate miracles

The Proof of Immediate Miracles 

Proof – the establishment of the truth of anything; demonstration. establishes validity

Luke 5:24-25 NIV 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.

Acts 14:8-10 NIV In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.

Acts 3:1-9 NIV – One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. 38-42- When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? (Luke 6:46-49 MSG) “Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on. “If you work the words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who dug deep and laid the foundation of his house on bedrock. When the river burst its banks and crashed against the house, nothing could shake it; it was built to last. When we understand who we are & whose we are we will not be shaken

(Isaiah 53:5 NIV) “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

We don’t follow a frail Jesus he was a stud – strong

Jesus went through 4 types of torture before giving up his life

The Thorns

Then to the Praetorium – Military headquarters for Roman guards

The guards mocked & messed with Jesus for hours

Jesus already – skin off from his ribs, back and spine

Cut off a huge piece of a branch – fashioned it together

Big branch more like a helmet covered his head – crown of thorns

Thorns about 1 inch that were forced into his head

Beat the thorns into his head- gave him a stick like a scepter

Knelt before him in mockery – Spit on Him, pulled out His beard (Is 50:6)

Beat His head with a stick – migraine of all migraine headaches

Through the thorns he brought us peace 

  • He was punished; We have peace. 

Why?  He took the punishment that brought us peace

That punishment gave power to restore our mind

Many people misunderstand this peace

Jesus did not come to earth to bring peace

(Luke 12:51 NIV) “Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.”

He came so that we could have peace in the middle of a troubled world

(Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT)  “Trust the Lord with all your heart. Don’t depend on your own understanding. Honor the Lord in everything you do and he will give you success.” 

Trouble

What does trouble look like how does it come into our lives?

  • Confusion.

There are times & seasons when you do not understand life

(Psalm 10:1, 17 NIV) “Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? …You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry.”

It feels like God hears you and ignores you – unnecessary pain in your life

Even Jesus felt that way…

(Matthew 27:46 NIV) “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Why am I going through all this pain?

There was a moment that Jesus felt far from his Father

(Hebrews 4:15 NLT) This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

Jesus went through this pain to put your heart at peace

Not to give you all the answers

Even on the other side of trouble we don’t get all the answers

  • Depression.

On the rise in this nation like never before

All over TV – If you take this drug it might help you take it 75x

It might help you – Then the next hour tells you that you might poop on yourself, right eye goes blind, can’t eat pancakes

Things don’t go our way – we don’t understand

Minds run wild – Hearts sink – My life is a wreck

Maybe God won’t come through – This pain is for nothing

If you are feeling this way then you are in good company

Most of the bible is written & lived by a bunch of messed up people  Who figured it out in the end

(Psalm 42:3-5 NLT) “Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, ‘Where is this God of yours?’ My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God.”

Our minds are tormented by wishing it was different

Worship is always a part of the solution

Remind yourself of what God has done & who He is

  • Worry and fear.

Begin to spend emotional energy on things out of our control

90% of our energy is directed at things we have no control over

10% of our energy is focused on things that we can control

Jesus said it adds no value to your life

(Matthew 6:27 NIV) “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

No benefit of worrying

What we are doing when we worry is saying God is not enough

I have to carry this burden for him

We have to trust that God has everything worked out

He gave us a gift in this part of his torture – peace

(John 14:27 NLT) “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” Billy Witt

At Peace

How do you find this peace?

1. Accept God’s grace.   

Have to understand what Jesus has done for you

Most NT letters open or close by wishing Grace & Peace

(1 Corinthians 1:3 NLT) “May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.”

You don’t have peace unless you have grace – interconnected

Grace keeps us where we feel like we have to work it out on our own

It’s hard to wrap our human minds around grace

Greek word for Grace is the word “charis”

Means a gift or blessings, favor brought to man by Jesus

Literally means, “God is treating you as his child as though you have never made any mistakes in your life”

God’s message to us is you cannot earn it

Nothing you can to do lose God’s love – or earn his love – Grace is a gift

Paul was wrestling with a situation like ours

Trying to make sense of things – Trying to do it on his own

(2 Corinthians 12:8-10 NLT) “Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Instead of getting stressed out – Flip the whole deal – Grace

How is it going to happen, I don’t know but God’s grace is sufficient

2. Surrender to the Holy Spirit.   

The enemy attacks you in your mind

Thoughts that tell you how worthless you are, things won’t work out, steal peace

(Romans 8:6 NLT) “So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. (sin brings death/separation) But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.” 

Ask the Holy Spirit to help guide your thoughts

You need the Holy Spirit’s activity in your life

He’ll bring counsel, direction, peace

Read God’s Word ask the Holy spirit to guide your thoughts

3. Pray about everything that bothers you.

God is not freaked out by your problems – Talk to Him

God is not saying hey Jesus did you see this going on, “Oh myself” what is going on.

(Philippians 4:6-7 NLT) “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

The time I find myself at great stress is when I drift from God

Remind yourself you are not in control nor is the devil in control – God is

Peace comes to guard your hearts and minds

Salvation Call – Jesus, forgive me for all of my sins, I give my life to you, make me brand new. I believe you died for me so that I can live. Fill me with your spirit that I would know you, & serve you with my life. My life is not my own, I give it to you. Thank you for loving me, in Jesus name, Amen!

Finding a Way to Win

Introduction: Winning in life is not a matter of chance; it is the result of tirelessly and creatively looking for answers to problems

Proverbs 25:2 LB says, “It is God’s privilege to conceal things, and the king’s privilege to discover and invent.

In other words, God has given us the power and responsibility of searching for ways to win. There is always solutions to your challenges – Never settle for where you are.

1. There is Always a Way to Win with God 

Psalm 107:4-7 NIV – Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. 5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. 6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 7 He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.

God does not want you to live a defeated life, but to be a winner in this life. He gives us a way if we will just open up our eyes and look for it.

I Corinthians 10:13 NIV – No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Many times we tend to become blind to solutions when we are under pressure. We should never accept that we are hemmed in and that there is no way out. God is not a God who hems us in, but one who makes a way into wide open spaces. (Moses)

Isaiah 43:16 ESV – Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters,

Every great feat and engineering accomplishment took place because engineers, scientists, or researchers did not give up.

•The French tried for 19 yrs to build the Panama Canal. They concluded that, after losing millions of dollars and some 22,000 lives in the process, it could not be done. The two seas that were to be linked by the canal lay on different levels, there the task was impossible. Then along came The Americans. We succeeded in what is now considered a miracle of engineering. We invented locks that filled with watering allowed ships to travel up to the next level. We found a way to win.

Remember, “When you are face to face with difficulty, you are up against a discovery.” Lord Kelvin

•Have An Attitude of Action

Proverbs 23:7 – For as a man thinks in his heart so is he…

“Men are not moved by things, but by the views which they take of them”  Epictetus

We can adopt a fearful, fatalistic attitude about struggles disappointments, defeats, and difficulties OR we can find a way to win with an attitude of action!

Ephesians 3:20 NIV – Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

Once you think of possibilities and see things breakthrough in your life, you can never go back to the small confines of a mediocre, limited, average life.

Leonardo da Vinci once said; “Iron rusts from disuse; stagnant water loses its purity, and in cold weather becomes frozen; even so does inaction sap the vigours of the mind.”

If we settle down to accept whatever comes along without even trying to win over negative circumstances, then we will shrivel up and become stagnant and stale.

•A Time to Pray and a Time to Play

In The Book of Heroic Failures by Stephen Pile, the story of the soccer match between Brazilian teams Rio Preto and Corinthians  highlights the need to be practical. While the Brazilian goalkeeper, Isadore Irandir was still kneeling with his eyes shut finishing his prematch prayers, the ref blew the whistle for the start of the game. The Corinthian striker, Roberto Rivaling, seized this spiritual moment to shoot from the halfway line and scored the first goal of the match,, just 3 seconds after kick off.

We need to know when to Pray and when To Act

Ecclesiastes 8:5-6 NIV – Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a person may be weighed down by misery.

When confronted with challenges some believers resort to prayer; not as reliance on God, but as a way of abdicating their personal responsibility. They want God to do everything for them. (God is not going to tie your shoe laces, do it yourself)

I believe in Prayer. Prayer certainly changes things, but action coupled by prayer is even better.

James 2:14 ESV – What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?

Most things in life require effort and responsibility on our part, then God acts.

•The feeding of the five thousand would not have taken place if Jesus had just given thanks. Someone provided the five loaves and 2 fish to set the miracle in motion

•The wine at the wedding of Cana came fro the water with which  the men had first filled the pots.

Often when God is silent, we wrongly conclude that it is not His will to give us a solution – He is waiting for us to get moving first so that HE can act in our action!

Jesus was encouraging His followers not to settle for what is, but to press on and find a way to win.

Luke 11:9-10 AMP – “So I say to you, ask and keep on asking, and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking, and you will find; knock and keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who [a]keeps on asking [persistently], receives; and he who keeps on seeking [persistently], finds; and to him who keeps on knocking [persistently], the door will be opened.

This is about a persistent man who went to a friends home in the middle of the night unexpectedly to ask for food. The friend was reluctant to help. The man eventually received what he was asking for because he would not give up and refused to take no for answer.

God does not want us to give up and take NO for an answer. When you and I face difficulties we should always expect God to back us up as we try to find a way to win.

We should not just give up because we are faced with closed doors – our answer could be on the other side.

Walt Disney in his quest to build Disney World, approached over 300 banks before he was granted a loan. IF a man with a passion to make people happy could have such determination, then surely the church, who can truly make people happy, should persist and find ways to win.

Lester Sumrall said, “Champions are a rare breed. They see beyond the dangers, the risks, the obstacles, the hardships.”

God did not create us to be the misery of creation – We are created to reflect God’s Glory and creativity. He wants us to use all the abilities and faith he has put in you to live about the ordinary and mundane. NEVER accept things as they are until you have explored every avenue for success.

2. When we Win God Wins

I John 5:4 ESV – For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Overcomes (Nikos) – To conquer, Champion of the games

John Maxwell said, the significant difference between champions and losers is how they view their circumstances. 

Romans 8:37 NIV – No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

(hypernikos)- more than, over above and beyond, greater, top notch, paramount, ovwhelming enormous

•This is the kind of FAITH God puts on the inside of YOU!

If we allow defeat and failure to cripple us, then God is not honored and we are to living in His best that He provided for us.

Never Settle into a Defeated Situation

When King Saul was faced with battles he thought he couldn’t win, he settled into inactivity. He said nothing and he did nothing.

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing,” Edmund Burke

There are two things you should never do in a crisis

•Run away from challenges  •Let problems paralyze us

“The stairs of opportunity are sometimes hard to climb, and that can only be well done, by climbing one step at a time, but he would go to the top, never sits down and despairs; Instead of staring up the steps, he just steps up the stairs.”

I Samuel 17:32-36 NLT32 “Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!”33 “Don’t be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “There’s no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You’re only a boy, and he’s been a man of war since his youth.” 34 But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. 36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!

Saul was sitting with his army waiting for something to happen. Goliath had threatened him and his army and nobody could find a way to win. Saul had settled into a defeated deadlock with the giant, and even though he had an army of experienced men, he allowed his lack of weapons to stop him from waging war.

•Saul had no Faith in God

Israel did NOTHING and God DIDN’T do anything…..Until a 17 yr old named David took Action. A creative young man with courage and confidence in God.

David’s weapons of choice – five smooth stones, the most unlikely way to win. But was the winning way.

I Samuel 17:50 NLT – So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword.

I Samuel 19:5 NIV – He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?”

3. God is on Our Side and Helps Us Find a Way to Win

Psalm 60:12 NIV – With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies. (“We can win with God’s help.” 

Some people feel that they do not deserve success. They feel that God is in heaven deciding on a daily basis whether they deserve to be blessed or not. This results in a lifestyle of uncertainty and hesitancy and a life without faith.

Romans 8:31 NIV – What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

God wants nothing more than to see us succeed. He loves you and made you in His image.

Fact is, you cannot avoid or ignore problems in hope that they will just go away. Stop being a victim and rise up and face the challenges of life .

Remember: There are never problems that can’t be solved. The best way to escape a problem is to solve it!

-The US Peace Corps’ has abilities to deal with any and every tricky conditions when abroad. Example given to men who find themselves in the jungles of South America and who might be faced with the largest snake in the world, the anaconda .

•A full grown anaconda is not just a snake, it’s a telephone pole with a temper. It takes 10 men to carry one, if its in a good mood.

Here are the instructions from the Peace Corps’ Manuel

  1. If an anaconda attacks you, do not run. The snake is faster than you are so don’t even try to outrun it.
  2. Lie flat on the ground. Put your arms tight against your sides, your legs tight against each other.
  3. Tuck in your chin
  4. The snake will come and begin to nudge and climb about your body.
  5. Do not panic
  6. After the snake has examined you, it will begin to swallow you from the feet. Always from the feet. Permit the snake to swallow your feet and ankles. Do not panic.
  7. The snake will begin too suck your legs into its body. You must lie perfectly still. This will take a long time.
  8. When the snake has reached your knees, slowly and with as little movement possible reach down, take your knife and very gently slide it into the slide it into the snakes mouth, between the edge of its mouth and your leg. Then suddenly rip upwards, severing the snake through the top of its head.
  9. Be sure to have your knife with you.
  10. Be sure your knife is sharp
  11. Of course, if you get to number nine, or even ten, and find that you’ve forgotten your knife or that it is blunt, the rest doesn’t really matter.

No Situation is ever hopeless. 

Claire Booth said, “There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them.”

Don’t allow your troubles and challenges to swallow you alive. God always provides us with a strategy and a way to win!

Defeating Discouragement

There is a plague sweeping the country today. It’s not the Beijing flu, or cancer, or even the common cold. This outbreak, however, can be just as deadly as the most dreaded disease known to man ­it’s called the epidemic of discouragement.

It’s universal. None of us are immune to discouragement. Everyone you have ever known has been discouraged at one time or another.

It’s recurring. Being discouraged once does not give you an immunity to the disease. You can be discouraged over and over again. In fact, you can even be discouraged by the fact that you are discouraged a lot.

It’s highly contagious. Discouragement spreads by even casual contact. People can become disheartened because you are discouraged. You can be bummed out because other people are discouraged.

Discouragement is to lose courage or hope; it is to become overwhelmed or lose heart. When we are discouraged it’s easy to want to quit–to stop doing the very things God told us to do.

Discouragement says, “What’s the use of trying anymore? Isn’t it time to just give up and make the best of it?” The nation of Israel faced that kind of discouragement.

Text: I Kings 19:1-5 NIV – Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” 3 Elijah was afraid[a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”

•Elijah had a close relationship with God and was used powerfully by Him. Many people witnessed the greatness of God through the prophet.

•Elijah encouraged many people. He helped a widow and her son who were down-and-out and had only enough food for one more meal. Elijah told the widow that God would provide, and He did. Later, when her son died, Elijah asked God to bring him back to life, and God did. This widow’s hope was restored through Elijah.

•Elijah did many other amazing works by the power of God, but the Bible shows that even great people of God can get tripped up by the trials and challenges of living God’s way in a world under the sway of Satan. The story of Elijah’s descent into depression is a classic.

•Not only was Elijah hated and threatened with death by the evil Queen Jezebel, he also felt his work had been in vain and that no one else was supporting God. He felt totally alone, vulnerable and hopeless. Being human like you and me, all this started to get to him.

•Elijah got discouraged and wanted to quit.

We all want to know how to get through what we are going through. Difficult circumstances affect our moods on a daily basis and can get us discouraged if we let them.

Let’s consider the effect that it had on him.

  1. Caused him to exaggerate the negative and underestimate the positive
  2. Drove him into isolation
  3. Caused him to sulk in self pity
  4. Caused him to be irrational
  5. Took him off course with God’s plan for his life

Elijah’s discouragement got so bad it turned into depression.

What is depression? 

Depression is a serious medical condition. Everyone experiences “ups” and “downs” in their life. But for some people the “downs” can outweigh the “ups.” This can cause problems with everyday activities such as eating, sleeping, working, and getting along with friends. If this happens for more than a few weeks, depression may be the reason.

Depression affects a person’s physical health, as well as how he or she feels, thinks, and acts toward others. It brings about a mixture of feelings and thoughts that can cause someone to depart from his or her usual behavior.

Depression is very common — it affects an estimated 19 million American adults every year. Nearly twice as many women (6.5%) as men (3.3%) suffer from depression each year. The good news is that you can be free from it!

You Must QUIT Focusing…

(Discouragement) Can be temporary–or it can destroy our life. The choice is ours. If we refuse to deal with discouragement head-on, we are opening the door for it to completely dominate our life. – Dr. Charles Stanley

What was it that caused Elijah to become discouraged? What made him want to quit? What causes us to do the same thing? WRONG PERSPECTIVE; in other words, we focus on the wrong things.

When you face discouragement, you can do one of two things, and the one you choose will color your perspective. You can look at others to place the blame, or you can look at yourself to discover your opportunities. The choice is yours. – John Maxwell

  1. The Pain of Yesterday

Jeremiah 6:14 NIV – They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. Peace, Peace, they say, when there is no peace.”

Ecclesiastes 7:10 NIV Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions.

We make the same mistake. Our perspective can sometimes be wrong; instead of looking forward, we look back at the good old days. Then rather than having faith to move forward, we too find ourselves becoming discouraged and stuck in the past.

God doesn’t want us to just “live in the past”. It’s not good to think how much better it used to be in days gone by because our perspective is wrong.

A WRONG PERSPECTIVE FOCUSES ON THE PAST WITH NO HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. A wrong perspective seeks to resurrect the good old days instead of looking ahead for even greater days. The church of Jesus Christ is not call to move backward or retreat; we’re to move forward with the power of the Holy Spirit!

2. The Pressures of Tomorrow

Matthew 6:34 NIV – “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

4 Principles that will Defeat your Discouragement

Dr. Hans Selye researched and popularized a tiny membrane in the back of our head known as the RAS: Reticular Activity System. Primary function – it moves in the direction of your dominant thought at that moment. When we become preoccupied with a thought, we want to act on it.

Ephesians 4:23 AMP – And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind (having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude)

The spirit of your mind is referring to a mood of mind or frame of mind. It is our responsibility to be constantly renewed and get ourselves out of the funk we are in.

What we think determines, to a large degree, how we feel

Proverbs 23:7 NKJV – For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

Spiritual and Positive forces will always supersede negative forces. Quit negative thinking and self talk.

Philippians 4:8 NIV – Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Guard You Emotions: Your mind is a computer – it spits out the data you feed it

Proverbs 4:23 NIV – Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

2. Pray to God

I Kings 19:9-10 NIV – 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Billy Graham said, “The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, ‘O God, forgive me,’ or ‘Help me.’ 

“The less I pray, the harder it gets; the more I pray, the better it goes.” Luther

In the jungles of Africa, a man was being pursued by a roaring, hungry lion. Feeling the beast’s hot breath on his neck, and knowing his time was short, he broke out into prayer as he ran like crazy, “O, Lord, please make this lion a Christian. Please make him a Christian!” Within seconds, the frightened man noticed that the lion had stopped chasing him. When he looked behind him, he found the lion kneeling and moving his lips in obvious prayer. Greatly relieved at this turn of events, he got close enough to the lion to hear him pray, “And bless, Oh Lord, this food which I am about to receive.”

John 16:23-24 NIV – In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

Spiritual comfort comes through Prayer. Shut off from the world and have a time of Centered prayer.

Psalm 43:5 ESV – Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

Salvation in this verse does not mean eternal salvation. It means deliverance, or the sense of helping someone out of their difficulty.  This is what God does during times of depression and difficulty. He will deliver you. You have to hope in Him, and decide that God can help you.

Philippians 4:6 NIV –  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 

Prayer can change ANYTHING. Prayer can change EVERYTHING

Psalm 5:3 NIV – In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;  in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.

3. Understand the Power of your Praise

I don’t know about you, but it’s easy for me to forget God when things are tough. I need to be reminded that He is always there for me. How do you remember the Lord?

This is where we begin to focus on the securities of God, not our insecurities. Its expressing my affection to God and focusing my attention on God

Psalm 43:4 ESV – Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God.

•When you are feeling no joy, go to God, who will release to you His joy through worship. Music has an amazing power on people who are sick and especially on people who are depressed. The Bible has examples of Saul going to David and asking him to play the harp. It soothed Saul’s soul. Worship will soothe your soul as well. (Example: Tricia in hospital)

•I have found that many times, when I feel discouraged, when I can’t go on, worship lifts me up. Turn on your iPod  and just start to sing and worship. I visualize the hope that I have in Christ when I listen or sing praises to Him.

Isaiah 61:3 NKJV –  To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

“Worship isn’t crawling though a small hole to some theological wonderland. It is falling back upon God and finding that He is everywhere and anywhere you can fall.”

We take coffee breaks, rest breaks, and lunch breaks. Why not take a Praise Break! God answer for depression is PRAISE! It’s one antidepressant we all need. 

Praise takes our minds off our situation and focuses them on God. It accepts that God can take all the bad stuff of life and make something beautiful out of it.

Acts 16:25-26 NIV – About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.

•Rather than sulking in despair, Paul and Silas got themselves moving in the direction of their faith through Praise and Worship. We can sing our way out of despair, we can smile our way of that funk, We can worship our way out of our heaviness!

Prayer opens the door for God’s power to move into our lives. But the prayer of praise releases more of God’s power than any other form of petition. The Psalmist wrote, “But thou art holy, O thou that inhabits the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:3 KJV). God actually dwells, inhabits, and resides in our praise. God’s power and presence is near when we praise him. When we praise God for the present situation, God’s power is unleashed.

I Kings 19:15-16 NIV – 15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

•He had to shed tears of self pity. Was time to get back to work for God.

Romans 8:28 NIV –  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

Many people succumb to this infamous tool of Satan. Maybe you feel its effect now. You can rise above discouragement. Believe that the best is yet to come. Hold on to your dream with a bull-dog tenacity and perseverance that refuses to let go.

Our words have the power of life and death, and all of us have felt the effects of words spoken over our lives whether good and bad. What matters most is what words you choose believe!

In the beginning, God spoke the world into existence…with his words God created the Earth…the land and the sea and everything in it. For seven days…He moved through the creative process with intentional words….words that gave direction to the process of creation. You and I were created in Gods image… Our words also have creative power….for good and for evil. To tear down and to build up. To make a mountain or to move a mountain.

Words were an important element in God’s work of creation. The plan of creation had been set in place, but God had to speak the words before it could become a visible reality. (Genesis 1) – Words carry creative power! We use words to describe, but God uses words to create! (Rom.4:17 – calling those things)

Proverbs 18:21 NIV – The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightening and a lightening bug – mark twain

1)A VERBAL PRISON IS WORDS THAT HOLD US BACK FROM THE BIGGER, THE BETTER, THE PROGRESS, THE INCREASE THAT GOD HAS FOR US.

Matthew 12:37 NIV – For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. 

Message – Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.”

Jesus is comparing the power of words to the power of a judicial process….

• To be condemned for a crime meant you would be incarcerated.

• To be acquitted of a crime meant you would be set free

Jesus is saying that the same way a jury has power to condemn you or liberate you….words contain us and hold us hostage…

EXAMPLE: Lets imagine that you have a 9 yr old son/daughter that comes home from school with math homework…your trying to help him with his homework and he’s telling you how he’s not good at Math….that he hates math….that he’s not smart enough to do math….

THESE ARE CONDEMNING WORDS.

QUESTION – Hopefully as a parent you now know that the first issue you have to change is what he is saying about himself…

All of us haven’t gotten in trouble with our mouths.

(James 3:2 NIV) “We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.”

James says, if you can control your mouth, you’re perfect He’s not talking about sinless.The word “perfection” in Greek literally means “mature/healthy”

When you go to the doctor and say, “I’m not feeling well,” The first thing he says is, “Stick out your tongue.” Your tongue reveals what’s going on inside of you. Not just true physically – but spiritually too

The truth is that everyone in this service….has spoke limitations over your life that was only self imposed limitations.

EX: I don’t like working with women…

EX: I don’t think I can ever trust men…

EX: I’m not good with people…

EX: I’ve tried to lose weight and I can’t…

EX: I hate health food…

EX: I hate to exercise….

EX: I don’t think you have to go to church to be a Christian…

EX: I’m not into the church thing…

EX: I have a hard time getting up on Sundays…

EX: I don’t like churches…

EX: I hate technology…

EX: I don’t need more money…

EX: I’m stuck where I am…

EX: If God wants me to have a better job he will give it to me

Joel 3:10 NIV – Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weakling say, “I am strong!”

There’s something significant in this verse…..If you are weak….you wont get strong by talking about being weak. You can only get strong by saying I am strong!! The point is NOT that you don’t have to do anything else….in fact it says Beat your plowshares into swords….and pruning hooks into spears…The point is that the right words will empower you as you step out to take on challenges in your life!

• Talking about your problems won’t make your problems go away.

• Talking sickness wont make you well

• Talking defeat won’t bring you victory.

• Talking poor wont help you prosper

• If you need solutions stop talking about your problems and start talking about solutions!!

• If you need better health…stop talking about your sickness and start talking about healthy living

• If you want to be an overcomer stop talking about difficulty’s and defeat…and start talking about overcoming…

  • If you want to prosper…stop the “poor talk”….the “we don’t have much” talk….the “we cant afford to” talk….go to work on your plans…be diligent in your budget…give God your tithe….and speak Gods blessing and favor over your life!!!….over your finances!!

2) THERES TWO WAYS THAT WORDS HOLD US BACK. THE WORDS WE HEAR AND THE WORDS WE SPEAK

2 Corinthians 4:13 NIV  It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[a] Since we have that same spirit of[b] faith, we also believe and therefore speak,

All of us have had good and bad spoken over our lives.

• For every negative thing someone else has proclaimed about you, God has proclaimed something good….positive.

• For every degrading comment someone else spoke over you, God

has spoken words of high value….

• For every word someone said that imposed boundaries and limitations on your potential….God has spoken words to remove those

limitations…..and move those boundaries….and set you free to be

everything he created you to be.

What matters most is what words you believe!!….WHAT YOU INTERNALIZE…THAT BECOMES PART OF YOUR INTERNAL DIALOUGUE.

• Are you gonna believe the degrading things someone said when they were angry?…..when they didn’t know what else to say?…your kids at school?…who taunted and teased and bullied you?….or are you gonna rise up and believe GODS WORD SPOKEN OVER YOU?

Are you gonna stay bound in prisons of low self worth?….prisons of low expectation?…or are you going to rise up in a spirit of faith and break out of those verbal prisons?…

Prov. 25:11 (NKJV) A Word Fitly Spoken Is Like Apples Of Gold In Settings Of Silver.

3) OUTSIDE THIS PRISON ARE THINGS LIKE BETTER HEALTH, IMPROVED AND NEW RELATIONSHIPS, ANSWERS TO PRAYER, FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITIES AND NEW BEGINNINGS WITH GOD

The truth is that everyone in this service….has spoke limitations over your life that was self imposed prophecies.

Isa 35:1-2, 6-7 NIV – The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7  The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.

EX: Most people know that in the Middle East there’s a large battle over

land between the Jews and the Muslims. If you visit there you can see

that in this region there are small areas of forest looking growth in

desert like places….The reason for that is that there are 2 different beliefs

about the land…2 different visions for the land. The Muslims believe this land is cursed by Allah and the Jews believe this desert area is blessed by God. That he has declared the desert to be a fertile land….a place of life.

QUESTION– Is there areas in your life that you’ve believed were hopeless….and impossible? Places where you have self imposed prophecies a negative report about that God wants to What have you said…that has built walls, boundaries…borders on your life?

Some of you have negative ideas, opinions that keeping you back from the great things God has for you…..

• So you hold back in moments when you could step out!!

• You’re invited to take steps of salvation…new beginnings but you’ve held back…

• Now you’ve formed a habit of saying no…not yet…I’m ok where I am…

Your future does not respond to anyone’s voice but your own 

Mark 11:23 ESV – Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

We are not missing it in our believing, we are missing it with our words – Your mountains need to hear your voice!

Start saying things you want to happen in your life, not what you don’t want to happen! Jesus said to speak to the mountain, not about the mountain.  Jesus said you can have what you say, but you have been saying what you have.

The Words we speak indicate what we believe in our hearts and ultimately determine what we will receive in life

Proverbs 23:7 NKJV “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”

The Bible says taste and see that the Lord is good!!

• Maybe today is the day for you to take a bold step …and experience

what God has for you!

• We are all going to pray a prayer of new beginnings…

• It’s an opportunity for you to experience what you’ve been missing out on!!….let God know that you want what he has for you!!…

What are you believing God for?​

Faith bridges the impossible with the possible

God exists in the realm of the possible. All things are possible for God.

We live in a finite world. With situations that sometimes look hopeless or impossible.

Faith connects these two realms. Faith makes the impossible possible to change our lives for the better.

Mark 9:23 – 23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.

3 Benefits to Faith

1. Salvation

We are saved through it

Ephesians 2:6-9 (NIV)6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

God has enough grace to cover the sins of the whole world and we can all obtain it through faith. We live at a time where we sin increasing at what seems to be an exponential rate but God just turns up his grace…

Romans 5:20 (NIV) 20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,

Credited Righteousness

Capital One

I am a customer of Capital One. I earn 1.5% cashback on everything I purchase. Yesterday, I just cashed in my Capital One Cash rewards. I got $672 for free which just helped my pay for some tires for my car. We all love it when the bank credits our account.

When we have faith, God credits our account with righteousness.
Our salvation and the whole New Testament doctrine are built on this verse:

Galatians 3:5-6 (NIV)5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

Just like Abraham, God will credit your account with righteousness because you believed. Those who have faith are now known as the sons of Abraham.

The number 1 benefit of faith is Salvation.

2. Relationship

God did not just save us and then leave us as orphans. He wants to have a relationship with us. Adam walked with God in the Garden of Eden but for us, to walk with him in this life, we must walk by Faith.

Walking with Him

Faith brings us into relationship with Him.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV) 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Amos 3:3 (NKJV) 3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

God is always consistent with his Word. If God lives in the realm of the possible and the infinite, then we must believe his word to stay in step with him. Sometimes that can be difficult be we must learn to trust in him over our circumstances.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

God said, leave it to me

There was one a time in my career that I was receiving unfair treatment and persecution. I would bring it before God in prayer and the Holy Spirit kept convicting me to not retaliate but to leave it to him. In my own understanding I kept on thinking of things I could do to clear my name, ways I could retaliate but God kept prompting me to trust him to take care of it and to do nothing. God lifted me out of that situation and “prepared a table for me in the presence of my enemies.”

God wants a relationship with us as a good Father. Not all of us have had a great relationship with our earthly Fathers. Sometimes that is due to struggling to obtain their approval.

Faith counts us approved

Matthew 3:16-17 (NKJV) 16When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He[a] saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

God was pleased with Jesus even before he did any ‘works’.

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV) 6But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

The number 2 benefit of Faith is that it brings us into relationship with the Father.

3. Divine Help

The God of the impossible is willing to intervene in our circumstances.

Healing

James 5:13-15 (NIV) 13Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Two Missionaries

I was once visited at my front door by two missionaries of a particular faith. After they found out that I am a Christian, they asked me certain questions. I was a student at Bible College at the time at very into the Word. The conversation turned to healings. They mentioned that they do not believe in healings, only blessings. I told them that at various times in my life I have seen healings and experienced them myself.

One of them said, “Are you telling me that if I go to your church, that I can be healed?”

“No!” I replied, “Because you don’t believe. But if you did believe, you could very well be healed.”

God can also give us wisdom to handle any of our trials.

Wisdom

James 1:5-6 (NIV)5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

God gives you a wisdom that helps you build your life and the life of those around you.

Miracles

Extraordinary Faith draws the miraculous into your life. Do you need a miracle?

Matthew 8:5-13 (NIV)5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith…
…13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.

What is Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV)11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is called a substance. It’s a spiritual stuff that begins to reside on the inside of you. All of a sudden you know that you have that thing you are hoping for before you see it. It’s the evidence of what you cannot see.

What Faith is not

Faith is not a denial of reality nor is it just a positive mental attitude.

Name it and claim it

Thank God for the Word of Faith movement. God revealed to some great some great, faith-filled men some essential truths about Faith. Faith speaks!

2 Corinthians 4:13 (NIV)13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[a] Since we have that same spirit of[b] faith, we also believe and therefore speak,

Some however started to believe that they could not admit that their situation was bad.

It is okay to face the facts about your current situation. Just remember – with God all things are possible. Take Abraham for example…

Romans 4:19-22 (NIV)19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”

Faith is not just optimism of a ‘positive mental attitude. Faith must be in God and in his Son Jesus Christ.

How do we obtain Faith?

So how do we get this faith?

By Hearing the Word

Romans 10:14-17 (NIV)14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

If you want to be built-up in your faith; hear the word and read the word. This will give you hope that in God, your situation could change for the better.

Beginning to hope again…

When we hear the word, it lifts our hearts. We begin to hope again. Faith comes from hope.

Colossians 1:3-5 (NIV)3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel

We ask in our hearts, “Could God do this for me? Is God willing?”

I AM Willing

A man with leprosy began to hope in Jesus.

Matthew 8 (NIV)12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b] When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

When we believe, God gives us each a measure of faith.

Gods gives us each a measure

Romans 12:3 (NIV)3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

Like any muscle, we can grow in our faith when we exercise it. But it will be tested!

The Testing of your Faith

James 1:2-4 (NIV)2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

The purpose of the test is that you will overcome through perseverance. Faith requires grit! You must be steadfast to believe in God’s word above your circumstance. So how do we overcome?

How to Overcome

God has given us armor to help us overcome. The moment you step out in faith you will likely get attacked! That’s why we are given the shield of faith.

Ephesians 6:12-16 (NIV)12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

In this verse I want to call attention to two particular weapons; a defensive weapon and an offensive weapon.

1. The Shield of Faith

“…take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

It can extinguish all of the fiery arrows of the evil one. Your faith can protect you from ALL of the enemy’s attacks. You will be attacked but you are not ill-equipped.

Stronger than Vibranium

This shield is more effective than that of Captain America. It is stronger than Vibranium Steel Alloy! It defends us from this seen and unseen. Not Satan, nor Hawkeye, nor the Green Arrow can overcome the Shield of Faith.

2. Sword of the Spirit

2 Corinthians 4:13 (NIV)13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken. “Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak,

Notice how Jesus overcame Satan in the wilderness:

Matthew 4:3-4 (NIV)3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Speak the Word of God in Faith and your will overcome. Confess the truth out loud and you will overcome and pass the test of Faith just as Jesus did.

“I Believe” (To Believe is Human, To Doubt is Divine)

I want to talk today about how hard it was for the followers of Jesus to get beyond his death to his resurrection. The reason I want to talk about it is because there are a lot of people who acknowledge that Jesus lived, was a great teacher…a Rabbi or prophet….but don’t believe that someone who was dead came to life again. If that’s a struggle for you….you might find it interesting to know that some of Jesus’ most devoted followers had the same struggle

““if you don’t have doubts you’re either kidding yourself or asleep. Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving.” Frederick Buechner

Our text this morning records Mary’s words to Peter and John after she went to the tomb where Jesus had been buried…she said…

John 20:1-2 ESV Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

The people who knew him best…chosen by him… they thought an empty tomb was nonsense

Luke 24:11-12 NIV But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

Buechner also said, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief’ is the best any of us can do really, but thank God it is enough.” 

Sometimes things happen that are hard to believe…. Like the huge plane that disappeared last year… I don’t know about you but I found it very hard to believe that a HUGE plane could just disappear!

• All the sophisticated equipment and satellite systems of the world….a plane that big is gone! Disappears off all the radar systems and satellite systems of the world…all we have are and a lot of theories …AND then there’s always some conspiracy theories…Like some of what you see in Ripley’s Believe It or Not… freaky…crazy…hard to believe!

•These kinds of things happen daily somewhere in the world….situations and circumstances that defy natural laws…break barriers of what we think is impossible… That’s how some would categorize what we celebrate today…with the resurrection of Jesus….Hard to believe/Impossible/a conspiracy….

While many believe that Jesus was a good teacher, a Rabbi….and was crucified. We believe that there’s more beyond the cross. We believe that Jesus literally, physically rose from the dead!!

Anytime there’s something hard to believe….like the resurrection….you may wonder how people get from wondering to believing?…..

Q=How is a theory or a rumor or a truth validated?….

1. FIRST OF ALL, IF WE ARE AN EYEWITNESS TO AN EVENT –  Meaning we are there when it happens and we see it and witness it ourselves. But when it comes to the resurrection, none of us were alive 2000 years ago so that’s out….None of us were there.

2) SECONDLY, IF ENOUGH OTHER PEOPLE SEE IT AND TELL US WHAT THEY SAW

>In court, the amount of eyewitness you have who tell the same story the stronger the case for truth.

>We believe a lot of what we have not seen because of enough credible people in history who saw and documented what they saw.

1. There were many people who witnessed the resurrection, wrote about it and had no motivation for saying it happened.

>They had nothing to gain and a lot to lose…(research how they suffered and died because of their stories)

Let me tell you about some of those people…

Matthew- saw a risen savior and documented it

Mark and Luke-spent time with Peter and others who saw a risen savior and documented those experiences…

John– saw a living Jesus, watched him die, walked away with his mother…then said he saw and had a meal with a risen Jesus.

Peter– said he saw him die and then spent time with a risen Jesus

James- The brother of Jesus…

Question= what would your brother have to do to convince you that he was the son of God?… he would have to rise from the dead! James who had never believed Jesus….was embarrassed by Jesus….said he saw him!

Paul…the chief persecutor of the church…the one who wanted to put the early church out of business…who wanted these other men to die wrote about the eyewitnesses naming Cephas and a group of about 500 that were with Jesus after the resurrection.

No royalty checks….nothing to be gained….but a lot to be lost… stuck to their story through grueling persecution and death. Some were themselves crucified… some were stoned to death… some beheaded….ALL OF THEM STUCK TO THEIR STORY OF A RESURRECTED SAVIOR.

B) The followers of Jesus documented their own disbelief.

They believed in him as teacher, Rabbi… like many people today…they believed he was great BUT they also believed he was dead!

• If you’re part of a conspiracy you tell a different story…you say: I never doubted…I knew it all along…we waited outside thetomb in a vigil…I had pre-printed T shirts that said “He is Risen” you make yourself look better…

• You don’t say: we were cowards; bewildered, overwhelmed and afraid…we were hiding…

• If you’re Peter and you’re making up the story: you don’t tell how you run away from your friends when they need you most and then deny knowing Jesus 3 times and launch into obscenities at the very suggestion that you were his friend….

• If you’re a friend of Thomas you don’t tell what the doubter said in private when he was afraid, upset and angry….

• Women of that day were not allowed to witness in court…So if you’re fabricating a story…you don’t document the women’s testimonies….it doesn’t count and you’re looked down on for even considering it!

This wasn’t a strategy, a conspiracy… a fabricated storyThis was their honest documented experience…What they saw and felt…experienced—clearly an honest documentation of how certain they were that Jesus death was a shock and that his resurrection was not something they expected or were quick to believe

Q= If you believe anything they say….why not believe everything they say about Jesus?

3) THIRD, PHYSICAL EVIDENCE.

Historical compatibility….geographical match ups…real people…real places… real garden…real tomb…. …that had a huge stone in front of it… being guarded by soldiers… was now empty…

• In court cases physical evidence is a huge! Physical evidence includes the aftermath of an event.

•The time our parents town and home was flooded

A) The resurrection of Christ is the only way to explain the massive amount of people going from a skeptical, fearful, doubtful position…..to a full on believer who is willing to live and die for what they have found to be true.

• Apostle Paul—went from persecuting Christians to being a devoted follower who was persecuted, in prison and died a martyr.

• Thomas– a bold doubter….a bold skeptic…who goes from doubting to preaching to dying a martyr.

• James the brother of Jesus who all his life felt embarrassed and humiliated by Jesus….and then after the resurrection saw Jesus for himself and walked into a church service in Jerusalem….his death was violent as well.

Followed by millions of stories…of real people, intelligent people, socially popular and social misfits…

>Former prison inmates.

>Former depressed

>From selfish to selfless

>From anger to self-control, peace

>From hatred to forgiveness

John Lennon once said, “Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue with that; I’m right and I will be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first – rock and roll or Christianity.”

Well, I still listen to the Beatles and enjoy them, but I think Lennon is wrong. Christianity will never die because Jesus is alive and the resurrection is proof that man doesn’t have the last word, God does.

B) At the end of the day….a sound argument will never convince someone to be a Christ follower but an experience will.

•The sound argument encourages someone to re-think, look again….but eventually it’s the awareness that God is real… that he is speaking to me…that he is calling me to serve him….FOLLOWED by a personal experience so real that his presence and power is undeniably at work in your life

**This is why many reasonable, intelligent people who started out unsure have come to the conclusion that Jesus died, was buried in a tomb and rose from the dead.

•The Proof of the resurrection is not in an explanation but in a changed life

CLOSING: (Ask that no one move…..everyone stay in your seats….until we dismiss)

It doesn’t make sense to believe Jesus was a good man, a good teacher who was crucified on a cross….and then stop short of believing in his resurrection.

• The same people who documented everything else about him are the same ones who documented his resurrection. If there is no resurrection you should abandon everything Christian.

• Because none of the rest matters…If he died and the resurrection part was fabricated…then the story’s and the scriptures has no significance in our lives

• If the resurrection is not true then take the cross off the wall…don’t wear it around your neck…

• Don’t have Christian wedding ceremonies…with those scriptures about how love overcomes all things and never fails…

• Don’t have a Christian funeral with the talk about heaven and eternal life….seeing your family and loved ones again.

If on the other hand, the story of scripture is credible then early Sunday morning….on the third day….Jesus got up!! He not only walked out of the tomb….he broke the power of sin and death off our life!….So that whoever believes in him would not perish but would have everlasting life!

• Easter means….He not only was a good teacher…a rabbi….a man who lived and died…

• Easter means…He is a risen savior!…He is the hope of the world!! As the song says: Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus just to take him at his word….Just to rest upon his promise… Jesus how I trust him how I prove him ore and ore”….

TO not just believe in the cross… but to go beyond the cross…to cross over to the reality that on the third day…the body that was placed in a borrowed grave…was suddenly filled with the breath of

God….

• Mary crossed over

• Peter crossed over

• James crossed over

• Thomas crossed over

• So many before you have crossed over….

• People not as smart as you have crossed over…

• People who were smarter than you crossed over…

• People with less information than you have crossed over…

• People with more information  than you crossed over

John 11:25-26 NIV Jesus said, “I AM the resurrection and the life! Whoever believes in me, even though they die, will live again. I give them eternal life for believing in me and they will never perish!”

Death is not the end of the story! NOTE: Not a principle. A person!   I Am! You need to get to know Jesus!

Brennan Manning said, “For me the most radical demand of Christian faith lies in summoning the courage to say yes to the present risenness of Jesus Christ.”

My prayer for you this Easter…

Ephesians.1:19-20 ESV  and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,”

The disciples had the knowledge of the resurrection, but didn’t have the power of the resurrection!  PAUL:

Philippians 3:10 ESV “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,  

A LIFE-CHANGING PRAYER

Romans 10:9 “I because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved”

PRAY: Dear God, I need your presence, and your promises, and your power in my life. Thank you for sending Jesus to pay for all the things I’ve done wrong by dying on the cross for me….

This is why I want to encourage you to PROFESS AND DECLARE FULL FAITH IN CHRIST. TO STAND UP FOR HIM like he stood up for you!!!

“The good news is not that Jesus Christ lived and died, but that He died and lives.”

(SALVATIONS) TO LIVE FOR HIM…TO FOLLOW HIM….TO PUBLICLY DECLARE HIM…TO PUT YOUR TRUST IN HIM!!!

Every year in January, people make new choices which they call New Year’s resolutions. The problem with New Year’s resolutions is we usually make them about trivial issues, not the most important things in life

TO RESOLVE: to decide, settle, determine, purpose 

RESOLUTION: a firm determination to do something

The story is told of a young boy who asked his father what his New Year’s resolution was; and, his father told him he was going to do everything possible to make his mother happy in the coming year. The boy, then, asked his mother what her New Year’s resolution was; and, she replied: “To do everything possible to ensure that his father kept his resolution!”

Priorities – A priority is anything to which we give first place, in order of importance. It is that which is most productive and beneficial to us. The things that matter most.

“We don’t drift in good directions. We discipline and prioritize ourselves there.”  Andy Stanley

Matthew 22:37-38 ESV And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment.

Your priorities aren’t what you say they are. They are revealed by how you live. Someone once said, no one is busy in this world, it’s all about priorities.

“If you don’t live by priorities, you’ll live by pressures. Either you determine what’s important in life or other people will determine it for you.” Rick Warren

God MUST be the priority not the secondary.

Revelation 3:15-16 ESV ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

You are as close to God as you chose to be! Spiritual growth happens by choice 

Critical Question

1 Timothy 4:7 ESV – Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness (Phillips) “Take the time and the trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit.”

3 John 1:2 ESV – Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.

What is Unhealthy in your life? Clean up your Spiritual Diet

• In a health screening, the Dr. will run tests & look for symptoms that might indicate ill health.

• Symptoms are red flags or warning signs that a part of your body is not functioning optimally.

• Spotting these symptoms early and making appropriated changes in diet & lifestyle can prevent a minor ailment from ballooning into a serious problem.

Truth: Spiritual growth is not determined how you act in church but how you discipline yourself and respond to life.

•Hot – You are growing.

(2 Thessalonians 1:3 ESV) We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers,[a] as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing

“The soul’s deepest thirst is for God Himself, who has made us so that we can never be satisfied without Him.” FF Bruce

•Cold – You do not know God yet.                                                                                        (2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV) In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God

•Lukewarm – You are drifting.

(Hebrews 2:1 ESV) Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

CS Lewis said, I have found a desire within myself that no experience in this world can satisfy; the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

How to Get There

•Discipline yourself daily. 

The Secret to your spiritual success is hidden in the daily routine – A moral value or standard, a biblical belief we practice daily.

Success begins on Sunday – Sunday Worship must be a PRIORITY

Hebrews 10:25 ESV – not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Proverbs 23:12 ESV Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge.

Jeremiah 29:13-14 ESV “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile

1. Make Prayer a Priority

Richard Foster said, Prayer catapults us onto the frontier of the spiritual life. To pray is to change. Prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us.

Matthew 6:6 ESV – But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

•If you and I are too busy to Pray, we give our spiritual life a funeral!

Martin Luther said, “To be a christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”

Luke 18:1 NIV  Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

“Ought” – means we are under obligation, we are bound, and it is necessary for us to pray always.

We are Commanded To Pray

I Timothy 2:8 NIV  Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing

James 5:16 NIV – Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (effectual & fervant)

•Prayer produces Results

•Effectual – to be operative at work, to put forth with power

•Fervant – to be hot or to boil, tenacious in the spirit, heartfelt, earnest, persistent

None of us can justify a prayer less life. Listen, Prayer is the world’s greatest wireless connection.

The greatest value in prayer is not what you can get from God but what you learn & become

Our most sincere prayer should be: Lord Teach us to Pray…” Luke 11:1 NIV

What is Prayer? Communication (dialogue) Communion (relationship) Channel for divine power (supernatural)

Why Pray?

Prayer must be a necessity, not an option! Not only is it a privilege but it’s a duty! It’s a blessing not boring!

1. In Order to keep from Fainting

Fainting here is not a physical problem of a temporary loss of consciousness as a result of an inadequate blood to the brain. Fainting is a spiritual condition posing a constant danger to all believers unless they pray!

Faint – to be weak, to fail in heart, to be weary. To toil, to tire, to be sicken.

We live in a time where we are dealing with pressures, weariness, strife, problems, (job, $, Family) difficulties, oppression – enough to make even the strongest of people weary.

“If I should neglect prayer but a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith.” Martin Luther

Galatians 6:9 NIV Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Answer – Prayer is the one of the most rejuvenating, reviving, restful, experiences a person can engage in. Not so much for the body, because prayer is work, it’s action, it’s movement. But for the Mind, Soul, Spirit, and Heart of a person.

Psalm 17:5 NIV – My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled.

2 Corinthians 4:1,16 NIV – Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 16  Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2. In Order to Overcome Satan

Satan not only attacks us but he also attacks our prayers in order to stop them!

Our prayers not only bring personal victory over Satan; they can spare others for whom we pray from destruction. (Jesus’s prayer for Peter)

Luke 22:31-32 NIV –  “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

2 Corinthians 13:7 NIV – Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.

Luke 22:40 NIV On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”

3. In Order to Maintain a Forgiving and Repentant Heart

Matthew 6:14-15 NIV – For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

•Obtaining forgiveness when we fail, is directly connected to our willingness to forgive others. Be quick to forgive.

Luke 17:3-4 NIV –  So watch yourselves.“If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

•Whoever sins should repent! And we should forgive anyone who sins also. Even when others wronged us and do not ask our forgiveness, we should forgive anyway.

Through Prayer we are empowered to forgive and repent.

Mark 11:24-26 NIV – Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” 

4. In Order to be Spiritually Minded

I Corinthians 12:1 NIV – Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. (Ignorant)

Prayer is the deciding factor between being carnally minded (spiritual death) vs being spiritually minded. (Life and Peace)

Romans 8:4-9 NIV – in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

CS Lewis said, “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time – waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God – It changes me”

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 NIV – For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

Our greatest battle is that of the mind. The enemy injects into our thought system all sorts of devious, evil, immoral, hateful thoughts and imaginations. WE can conquer these through Prayer!

Carnality is the result of prayerlessness; spirituality is the result of prayerfulness.

When Should Pray? 

I Thessalonians 5:17 NIV – pray continually, (Never stop praying)

1. In the Morning  – Jesus prayed in the morning. It shows that it was His priority to spend time and commune with the Father.

Mark 1:35 ESV – And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.

2. In the Afternoon – Jesus actually had an attitude of prayer all day long

Matthew 14:23 ESV –  And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,

3. At Night – After spending time ministering, praying for the sick, casting out demons, and preaching the word of God, Jesus knew he was left empty because he had given everything he had. So he prayed.

Luke 6:12 ESV In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.

God Makes Outrageous Promises About What He Does WHEN WE PRAY

Don’t Give Up, Get Frustrated, disappointed, or lose hope – Praying is what we do in our time, and the answer happens in God’s time

A prayerful life is a powerful life! A prayerless life is a powerless life!

PRAYER can change ANYTHING. Prayer can change EVERYTHING. Prayer can change ME.
